MONROE - Casey Kenney kept his prefect record alive as the Jay County High School wrestling team turned in a solid effort at Saturday's Adams Central Invitational.
The Patriots finished third with 172.5 points before champion Bishop Dwenger (203.5) and Olympic Athletic Conference rival Anderson Highland (187). They came out ahead of sectional rivals Norwell (fourth - 166.5) and the host Jets (seventh - 139.5).
Kenney extended his undefeated record to 31 matches as he rolled to the 103-pound title with a 3-0 record. Caleb Culy also went 3-0 to win the 130-pound title as he improved to 25-5 on the year.
Other Patriots who turned in winning marks at Adams Central were runners-up Cameron Pfeifer (125), Skylar Finnerty (140) and Sha White (171) at 2-1, and Ben Theurer in third place at 3-1. Drake Meska (112), Aaron Miller (145), Brad Tipton (160) and Zach Ainsworth (189) each finished the day at 2-2.
Bader sweeps for Jay
YORKTOWN - Alex Bader won every event this weekend at the Robbin Lindsey Memorial Meet as the Jay County Winter Swim Team placed fifth in the eight-team field.
Bader was perfect in the 8-and-younger girls races at the three-day event, scoring victories in the 25-yard freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 25 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke, 25 butterfly and 50 butterfly. She joined Anna Nussbaum, Eliza Bader and Sydney Mathias in winning the 100 freestyle relay.
Sophie Bader was first in all but one of her 9-10-year-old girls events. She earned a state cut time in the 100 backstroke, and took the top spot in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.
Wiley Young turned in the only other individual win for Jay County, taking the 13-14-year-old boys 200 butterfly in a career-best 2:45.40.
Raiders stomp SA
PONETO - The Starfires were at least within reasonable striking distance at halftime. That was not the case after the third quarter.
The Southern Wells Raiders blanked the South Adams High School girls basketball team 21-0 in the third quarter Friday night as they rolled to a 56-23 victory.
SAHS trailed by eight at the half before falling apart after the intermission. The loss dropped the team to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the Allen County Athletic Conference.
Haley Killingbeck scored 16 points to lead Southern Wells (9-3, 4-1 ACAC), and Nikki Bunch and Meghan Prible each added 13. Bunch had a pair of 3-pointers during the big third quarter.
No Starfires reached double figures as Andrea Moser led the team with eight points. Anne Lehman had seven points, six rebounds and three assists, Moser grabbed 10 boards and Ashton Morgan had four steals.
