Patriots finish in ninth

HARTFORD CITY — Every Jay County runner had a season-best time Saturday as the Patriot girls cross country team finished in the middle of the pack at the Blackford Invitational.
JCHS finished ninth in the field of 18 teams with 260 points while No. 7 West Noble (29) won and No. 6 Huntington North (85) placed second.
Katie Simmons and Leah Wellman went back-to-back in 38th and 39th to lead the Patriots. Simmons finished in 20 minutes, 52 seconds, and Wellman was one second behind her.
Freshmen Abigail Johnson and Eme Miller finished in 56th and 59th in times of 21:37 and 21:40. Logan Laux, a senior, turned in the best time of her career — 22:00 — for a 68th-place finish.
Chaz Carroll was 111th for the Patriot boys team followed by Tyler Osborne (114th) and Zach Johnson (115th).

Jay netters split pair
MUNCIE — The Jay County boys tennis team split matches Saturday, defeating Muncie Southside 3-0 in a rain-shortened match and falling 4-1 to Connersville.
Derek Smith and Morton Garringer turned in shutout victories against Southside at No. 2 and 3 singles respectively. Brad Leuthold completed the win with a 2-6, 6-0 (13-11) win at No. 1 singles.
Both doubles matches were halted because of rain.
Joe Imel and Drew Wood picked up the Patriots’ lone win against Connersville 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Jay County picked up just five games in the other fourth matches combined.

SA volleyball wins one
WABASH — The South Adams volleyball team picked up one victory Saturday at the Wabash Tournament.
The Starfires defeated Taylor 25-17, 25-19. They lost 27-25, 27-25 to Bluffton, 25-18, 25-19 to Manchester and 25-14, 25-18 to Northfield. They are 3-14 on the season.

JC spikers lose 4
NOBLESVILLE — Jay County’s volleyball team dropped all four of its matches Saturday at the Noblesville Invitational.
The Patriots’ closest match came in a 22-25, 25-19, 15-7 loss to Huntington North. They lost 25-17, 25-20 to Noblesville, 25-17, 25-13 to Frankfort and 25-16, 25-11 to Wes-Del.
Mariah Hornaday led JCHS in the tournament with 28 kills, 10 points and seven blocks. Alyssa Rigby had 16 digs and 16 points, and Hannah Ainsworth finished with 11 digs and 10 points.
Maria Murphy totaled 14 kills, Tanner Martin put up 13 assists and Sierra Weatherhead had 12 digs.

EJ 7th goes 2-1
The East Jay Middle School seventh grade volleyball team went 2-1 Saturday at the West Jay Invitational, and the eighth grade team finished 1-2.
The seventh grade squad defeated West Jay 25-10, 25-14 and South Adams 25-14, 25-22 before falling 25-17, 25-23 to Wes-Del in the championship match. The eighth graders defeated West Jay 25-18, 25-16, but lost 9-25, 25-24, 15-9 to South Adams and 25-15, 18-25, 15-14 to Wes-Del.
Ava Kunkler led the seventh graders with 19 points, including 13 aces, and 11 kills. Kylie Osborne had 16 points and 11 assists.
Jessica Kerrigan finished with 22 points, including 15 aces, and 13 assists for the eighth grade Chiefs. Malarie Houck added 20 points and 10 aces.

Chiefs’ win opener
NEW CASTLE — The East Jay Middle School seventh grade football team staged a furious rally, scoring twice in the final minute Thursday to defeat New Castle 12-6.
The Chiefs gave up a first-quarter score before finally pulling even on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Michael Vanover to Levi Hummel with 49 seconds left in the game. Mitchell Bruggeman picked off a pass with 16 seconds left, and on the next play Vanover connected with Hummel on an 85-yard pass play for the winning TD.[[In-content Ad]]
