Patriots get Elwood in 1st round (10/13/03)

Local Roundup

If Jay County’s volleyball team sees either of the two ranked teams in the Delta Sectional, it will be a good thing. Because if that happens, the Patriots will have made the championship match.

In the sectional pairings, released today by the IHSAA, Jay County drew an opening round match against Elwood. The other first-round match will pit Mississinewa against Tipton.

Those matches will be played Thursday, Oct. 23, with the Patriots’ contest tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. and the other match to follow. The winners of those matches will meet in the semifinal round Saturday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m.

Class 3A No. 8 Blackford and No. 10 Delta each drew first-round byes, and will meet each other in Saturday’s second match.

The championship match will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Wawasee regional.

WJ blasts Salamonie

It was a good way to end the season for the West Jay football teams.

The seventh grade team finished at 6-1 with a 22-0 destruction of Salamonie, and the eighth grade team (5-2) rolled to an 8-6 triumph.

Andrew Lancaster got the seventh grade team off to a quick start, running back the opening kick 72 yards, setting up a 2-yard touchdown run by Alan Brown.

Brown added a 12-yard touchdown run later in the contest. Jon Hawn ran in the final score from one yard out.

Andrew Lancaster was successful on a pair of two-point conversion runs.

Zack Hummer and Seth Pitman also had interceptions in the victory.

Cori Vormohr led the Jay County Winter Swim Team as it opened its season Saturday with eight swimmers competing in the Pendleton Falls Invitational. She had four of the team’s six victories on the day.

The other victories for Jay County came from Daniel Velasco in the 8-and-younger boys 25-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle. He was also second in the 25-yard backstroke.
