Patriots' Gray shoots 1-under again (04/17/07)

ALBANY - Adam Gray would have been hard pressed to start the season any better.
After an outstanding round at Saturday's Bellmont Invitational, Gray posted one of the best rounds in Jay County history with a 1-under-par 34 Monday at Albany Golf Club. The Patriots still came out on the short end of a 153-166 score to the No. 11 Delta Eagles.
The blustery day didn't seem to have much effect on the golfers as Delta's Chase Wright bettered Gray by a stroke, and fellow Eagle Cameron Parker shot a 35. Wright's effort was highlighted by an Eagles on the par-4 15th.
Gray, a sophomore, was solid to start his round before catching fire at the end.
At 3-over through five holes, he notched his first birdie of the round on the par-4 15th. And he never stopped, adding birdies on the par-4 16th, par-5 17th and par-4 18th.
Gray has now been under par in two of his three-nine hole rounds so far this year. He shot 1-under on the front nine at Grey Goose Saturday en route to a second-place finish in the Bellmont Invitational.
The other Patriots followed Gray's lead, scoring well on the final four holes.
Gray Suman posted the No. 2 score for Jay County at 43, which included pars on the 16th, 17th and 18th. Luke Darby was one stroke back thanks to pars on 16 and 17.
Chris Shannon and Jonathon Fennig both parred the 15th hole on the way to matching 45s. Shannon immediately followed with a birdie on No. 16 while Fennig played the 17th at 1-under.
Justen Moser also had two pars in his final three holes for a 46.
Junior varsity
Chase Wellman led the Patriots with a 45 while Delta did not have enough golfers for a team score.
Wellman opened his round with a par on the par-4 10th, and added pars on the 14th and 17th holes.
Kyle Cook and C.J. Comer were each a shot back at 46, and Aaron Daniels finished with a 60.[[In-content Ad]]
