Patriots have big 5th to down Mississinewa (04/12/04)

Jay County Roundup

Jay County finally broke through with the big inning.

The Patriot baseball team had not scored more than two runs in an inning in the first two games of the season, but scored five in the fifth against the Mississinewa Indians Saturday in a 7-4 victory.

With Jay County (2-1) trailing 4-2 after four innings, each of the first five batters reached base and scored in the fifth.

Chad Keen started the rally with a lead-off double. Trent Bailey was hit by a pitch, and Josh Shatto knocked a single to load the bases.

Corey Locke then tied the game with a two-run double, and Mike Smith followed with a two-run double of his own to put the Patriots ahead. Heath Williams drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI double to bring Smith across the plate.

Shatto finished 2-for-4 with a couple of runs and an RBI, and Chad Keen was also 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Smith, Locke and Williams also had doubles in the game. Smith notched three RBIs and a run, Locke had two RBIs and a run and Williams finished with an RBI and a stolen base.

Keen picked up the victory, going six innings and allowing four runs — three earned — on five hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Smith earned the save by striking out two in one scoreless inning of relief.

Jay County will play at Wapahani Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Pats place fifth

If the opening event is any indication of how much the Jay County golf team has improved, it could be a very exciting year.

The Patriots opened the 2004 season Saturday, finishing fifth at the Yorktown Invitational with a score of 324. The 2003 sectional runners-up were 12th out of 13 teams at the tournament last season.

The host Tigers finished first at 302, Anderson was second at 314 and Muncie Central placed third at 317. New Palestine was just two strokes ahead of Jay County at 322, and Delta was two strokes back at 326.

Tyler Johnston led the effort for Jay County with a 77. Jesse Shawver shot an 80, Nathan McClung came in with an 82 and Adam Foster rounded out the team scoring with an 85.

The Patriots will play at home Thursday against Wapahani (seventh, 337) at 4:30 p.m.

Jay drops pair

They were two very different games, but the result was the same.

Jay County’s softball team lost a close opener and a not-so-close second game Saturday against Olympic Athletic Conference rival Connersville. The Spartans defeated the Patriots 4-2 and 12-3 in the double-header.

Jay County (1-3, 0-2 OAC) was in control for much of the first game, scoring once in the first inning and once in the third for a 2-0 lead. It stayed ahead until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Spartans tied the game with a two-out, two-run double.

Connersville (4-1-1, 2-0 OAC) added a two-run home run in the sixth inning for the final margin.

Game two was over after the third inning, when the Patriots gave up nine runs. They committed two errors and gave up four walks in the frame to allow Connersville to pull away.

Ashleigh Myers was the game-one losing pitcher as she allowed four runs on five hits. She walked three and struck out two.

Brittany Logue suffered the defeat in the second game as she gave up 12 runs — 10 earned — on 14 hits. She walked six and struck out three.

Jenni Chittum and Stephanie Imel each had two hits and an RBI in the first game. Andrea Current finished with a hit and a run, and Saffron Redwine scored a run.

Katie Alberson singled twice and scored a run in the second game, and Miranda Betz added a pair of singles. Redwine had one hit, one run and one RBI.

Danielle Jackson also singled and scored a run.

Jay County’s next game is at home Wednesday against Bellmont at 4:30 p.m.
