Patriots hold off Southside

MUNCIE — The Patriots escaped with a win, barely.
Jay County High School’s boys soccer team held off the Muncie Southside Rebels on Monday, eking out a 6-5 victory.
Senior Alex Dunn led the Patriots (7-7) to the victory over their sectional rival, scoring both of their first-half goals for a 2-1 lead at the break. He added a third goal in the second half to complete his hat trick.
Colton McCombs added a pair of second-half goals off of assists from Alex Abbott and Dunn. He also assisted on the first Dunn goal and on a score by Colton Compton in the second half.
Dunn led JCHS with six shots on goal, and Abbott and McCombs each added three.
Kyle Dirksen finished with two saves in 60 minutes of play, and Kevin Scott made two saves in 20 minutes.
Eagle runners lose
DUNKIRK — West Jay Middle School’s boys cross country team finished last on Monday as it hosted a three-team meet. The Eagles scored 69 points to trail the Monroe Central Golden Bears (23) and Muncie Burris Owls (49).
Tanner Craw turned in the top finish for West Jay as he placed sixth in 12 minutes, 25 seconds. Ian McCombs was 14th in 13:55 followed by Rob Garringer (15th – 14:03), Matthew Paquette (17th – 14:15) and John Paquette (18th – 14:29).
Wendel leads
Chip Wendel was the leading scorer in Saturday’s action in the Jay Community Center’s soccer league.
Wendel was the top scorer in the seventh and eighth grade division with five goals. Dylan Marentes had four goals in the pre-school and kindergarten division.
Other scoring leaders were Carter Link, Gradyn Moyer and Hunter Shumaker (three goals each) and Hannah Phillips (two).
Mason Ludy and Josh Dowlen each had a pair of touchdowns in the flag football league.
Leaders from the first week of the season on Sept. 15 were Maddox Huffman with six goals and Carter Fugiett with six touchdowns.[[In-content Ad]]
