Patriots hold on for seventh in a row (05/25/04)

Jay County Roundup

The Bluffton Tigers made a late run Monday, but it was still not enough to stop the Patriots’ roll. Jay County won its seventh straight baseball game 7-5 Monday despite a four-run, seventh-inning rally from Bluffton.

The Patriots (17-8) scored at least one run in every inning except the second, building a 7-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.

Bluffton’s offense finally came alive as each of its first three hitters in the final inning reached base with a hit, a hit by pitch and an error. Each of those three scored as part of the four-run frame, but Jay County starter Chad Keen was finally able to get the third out to keep his team’s winning streak alive.

Keen earned the win, allowing five runs — four earned — on 10 hits in the complete game. He was having an outstanding game before the seventh inning as he finished with 15 strikeouts and no walks.

The junior also powered the Jay County offense as he and Trent Bailey swapped positions in the order. Hitting in the No. 2 slot Keen crushed a solo home run in the fifth inning as part of hits 2-for-2, two-run game.

Dropping to No. 3 in the order, Bailey finished with a trio of RBIs.

Adam Brandt’s lone hit of the game was a solo home run in the fourth inning, and Heath Williams, Mike Smith, Mike Alberson and Nathan Miller each added two hits. Williams doubled and scored twice, and Miller also had a double.

Jay County will play its final road game of the season today at Monroe Central at 4:30 p.m.
