Patriots lose close game to Coldwater (05/10/03)
Local Roundup
The Jay County softball team lost its seventh straight game Friday 4-3 to the Coldwater Cavaliers, but at least it finally got a bit of an escape from its hitting slump.
Having garnered just three hits in their last three games combined, the Patriots notched five hits against Coldwater (13-8) to nearly pull off the upset.
Jay County (5-16) gave up three first-inning runs for a 3-1 deficit, but scored once in the second and once in the third to tie the game. However, the Cavaliers got right back on top with a run in the bottom of the third and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Ashleigh Myers took the loss, allowing four runs — two earned — in six innings. She gave up six hits and two walks while striking out one.
Stephanie Imel had a pair of doubles, an RBI and a stolen base to lead the Patriots’ offense.
Saffron Redwine was 1-for-3 with a run and a pair of stolen bases, and Renae Laux went 1-for-3 with a run and one stolen base.
Myers had the other Jay County hit and an RBI, and Jenni Chittum scored a run.
The Patriots face another difficult task Tuesday when they host Class 2A No. 3 Blackford at 4:30 p.m.
