Patriots lose to Bellmont

DECATUR — After topping an Adams County rival Thursday, the Patriots lost to another in Tuesday’s regular-season finale.
Jay County High School’s boys tennis team lost 4-1 to the host Bellmont Braves in its final match before the sectional tournament.
Jake Schwieterman and Evan Mathias picked up the lone win for the Patriots (5-10), who topped South Adams 4-1 on Thursday, as they rallied at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set to Austin Mann and Chris Faurote of Bellmont (12-4), Mathias and Schwieterman gave up just one game the rest of the way in a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Josh Lykins and Zach Pryor fell 6-3, 6-2 to Nick Huffine and Garrett McCord at No. 1 doubles, and Landry Inman lost the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-4 to Evan Selking.
Josh Martin and Nick Leuthold each fell in shutout fashion at No. 2 and 3 singles respectively to David Baker and Mason Selking.
JCHS will open sectional play tonight as it hosts Union City at 5 p.m.
Alex Krieg picked up an individual win and teamed with Kody Degler for a doubles victory on Tuesday as the Patriot junior varsity team lost 5-2.

LeMaster sets record
Alex LeMaster set a new course record Tuesday as the host East Jay Middle School sixth and seventh grade boys cross country team defeated Driver (Winchester) 15-50.
The eighth grade boys won 22-33, and the Chief girls earned an 18-44 victory.
LeMaster was more than a minute faster than the field to break the course record with a time of 12 minutes, 51 seconds. East Jay swept the top 10 spots in the race, with Skylar Myers second in 14:04 followed by Brandon McIntire (14:06), Gavin Randall (14:19) and Peyton Heniser (14:41).
Trevor Moeller paced the EJMS eighth grade boys with a win in 13:45 while Tim Hein was second in 13:52 and Ethan Wendel finished third in 13:58. Mark Hein took sixth in 14:32, and Dustin Bricker was 10th in 15:30.
Kendra Muhlenkamp and Erika Kunkler took the top two spots in the girls race for the Chiefs in 13:31 and 14:26 respectively. Breea Liette was fourth in 14:42 followed by Alex Bader (fifth – 14:46) and Jamie Valentine (sixth – 14:52).

WJ tops Raiders
PONETO — The West Jay eighth grade volleyball team defeated the host Southern Wells Raiders 25-17, 25-20 on Tuesday, and the seventh grade team rallied for a 24-25, 25-10, 15-9 win.

Lillian Rogers paced the eighth grade Eagles in the victory with 19 service points, including six aces. Alli Campbell added six service points.
Kady Finnerty scored 16 service points for the seventh grade squad with 10 of those coming in the second game. Kimber Harris and Kaelyn Weaver added seven service points apiece.

Chief spikers split
East Jay’s volleyball teams went 3-1 Tuesday with the eighth graders topping host West Side (Union City) 25-17, 25-6 and the seventh grade team winning 21-25, 25-23, 25-13.
The EJMS sixth grade A team lost to 25-8, 25-11 to Yorktown, and the B team fell 25-12, 25-18.
Abby Barcus racked up 20 service points, nine aces and two kills as the eighth grade team improved to 10-4. Lizzy Schoenlein had 10 points, four aces, three assists, three digs and two kills.
Mallory Bost led the seventh grade team (5-8) with seven service points and six aces. Kaylee Inman added four service points and two kills.
Kailee Denney notched two aces for the sixth grade A team, and Skye Wimmer had three service points and three aces for the B team.

EJMS football loses
The East Jay seventh grade football team lost 14-8 Tuesday to visiting Dennis (Richmond), and the eighth graders fell 6-0.
Mitchell Frazier scored the only points of the evening for the Chiefs as he ran for 50 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion for the seventh grade squad (0-3-1). Ethan Myers ran for 55 yards, and Noah Hummel and Jacob Ferguson led the team in tackles.
Kaleb Kunkle had an interception for the eighth grade team.

JC pair takes gold
NOBLESVILLE — Darrin Martin and Jeremy Kunkler led a group of six Jay County unified teams that competed Sept. 15 in the Indiana Special Olympics State Golf Tournament.
Martin and Kunkler earned a gold medal at the tournament at Pebble Brook Golf Course. Ron Smith and Bill Schaffer picked up a silver medal, and Mark Knipp and Troy Atkinson earned bronze.
Fourth-place finishes went to the teams of Kurtis Atkinson and Abby Denney, Kristy Silverman and Jalisa Scott and Kameron Woodbury and Nathan Houser.[[In-content Ad]]
