Patriots make stunning comeback (05/21/07)
JCHS baseball
A 10-0 deficit almost always means "game over". That was not the case Saturday for the Patriots.
Just 11/2 innings away from being run-ruled out of their own tournament, the Class 3A No. 9 Jay County baseball team came roaring back. It scored three times in the fourth inning and seven in the fifth on the way to a 12-11 victory over the West Vigo Vikings in the championship game of the inaugural Patriot Invitational.
Jay County rolled to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Alexandria in its first-round game, and West Vigo made the finals with an 11-3 win over Cowan. Alexandria defeated Cowan 9-3 in the consolation final.
The Patriots (19-4) gave up five runs in the second inning and trailed 10-0 through 31/2. But JCHS wouldn't go away.
It rallied to tie the game in the fifth inning, then fell behind again when the Vikings (17-5) posted a run in the top of the seventh. Then the host team pushed back again, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the tournament title.
Andy Hughes powered the Patriot offense on the day, blasting home runs in each game. He went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the comeback over West Vigo, and was 2-for-3 with a run and four RBIs as Jay County crushed Alexandria.
Michael Jobe and Thomas McCowan had matching efforts in the championship game, each finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Josh Selvey went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Luke Goetz had two runs and two RBIs and Casey Waters also scored twice.
Josh Ludy turned in a solid pitching effort in relief for the championship victory. He gave up two runs - one earned - on three hits and two walks while striking out five in 32/3 innings.
The Patriots dominated the opener, taking a 5-0 lead and then scoring five more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jobe followed the big fourth with a one-two-three top of the fifth to end the game early.
He improved to 9-1 on the year with the three-hit shutout. The junior struck out eight batters and walked just one.
Goetz matched Hughes in the opener, hitting his first home run of the season - a two-out, two-run shot in the second. He finished 1-for-1 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.
Jobe smacked two doubles and scored two runs, Ludy had two runs and two stolen bases and Tony McCowan finished with a pair of hits.[[In-content Ad]]
