Patriots move up to 7th (12/16/2008)

Local roundup

INDIANAPOLIS - Rung by rung, the Patriots continue to climb.

Two more wins moved the Jay County High School girls basketball team one more step up as it earned the No. 7 ranking in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 4A poll released Monday.

Coming off of wins over Muncie Central, 61-50, and Anderson Highland, 57-50, the Patriots (9-0) earned 45 poll points. They were 13 ahead of No. 8 Penn (9-1) and 19 behind sixth-ranked Mooresville (8-0).

Ben Davis (9-0) remains atop the rankings, and South Bend Washington is second.

Jay County, which visits Blackford (5-3) tonight, is currently seventh overall in the Sagarin Ratings and was voted 14th in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll.

The Patriots' averages of 35.1 points allowed per game and 28.2 average margin of victory both rank them fifth in Class 4A.

Stars beat Wes-Del

GASTON - There was just enough offense left in reserve.

South Adams High School's girls basketball team scored as many points in the fourth quarter Monday as it had in the previous three to defeat the Wes-Del Warriors 36-32.

The Starfires struggled until the fourth quarter, trailing 23-18 with eight minutes to play. But they rallied behind 14 points from Tara Beitler to keep Wes-Del from picking up just its second win of the season.

The victory improved SAHS to 4-6, matching last year's win total. One more triumph would give the Starfires their best record since the 2002-03 season.

Jaci Liechty followed Beitler with eight points, and Tori Kistler added seven.

Sarah Williams led the Warriors with nine points. Ashley Trehearne followed with five points.

Lyndsey Chandler scored five points as South Adams lost the junior varsity game 27-12.

Fort loses opener

MINSTER - The Fort Recovery High School freshman girls basketball team dropped its first game of the season Monday 32-17 to the Minster Wildcats.

Ericka Lennartz scored six points to lead the Indians. Kara Faller and Karissa Will each added four points.

SA 8th grade loses

GENEVA - Struggling to score Monday, the South Adams Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team lost 24-8 to visiting Leo.

Bryanna Graat was the high scorer for the Starfires with four points. Tori Smith and Shanti Inniger each had two points.[[In-content Ad]]
