BERNE - The Patriot boys are perfect. The Starfire girls are close.
Both showed why on Saturday.
Jay County High School's boys soccer team (7-0) took a while to get going, but racked up three goals in a span of just over two minutes late in the game to pull away from host South Adams for a 7-3 victory.
The South Adams girls (6-1) won the first half of the double-header, 7-1 over the Patriots.
South Adams got on the board first in the boys game when Zack Sharp followed a shot by Travis Lavy less than three minutes into the contest. It took Jay County less than four minutes to even the score, but it also marked the first time the Patriots have trailed in a game since their season-opener against Muncie Central.
"The last two games, it's like we've got a mark on our back now and everybody is coming after us and everybody is playing just a little bit harder than us," said Bailey, whose team is 7-0. "The kids have got to pick it back up to where we were at.
"They were just more aggressive than us (in the first half). They wanted it. We were flat-footed, too sure of ourselves I think. We just played flat and they came after us. The same thing happened at Blackford."
The Patriots, who traded goals to a 3-3 tie with Blackford before scoring three unanswered for the win Thursday, tied South Adams when Horn scored on a pass from Patrick Johnson at the 33:24 mark of the first half.
Goals by Isaac Poole of Jay County and Sharp left the score tied at the half before the Patriots took control nine minutes after the intermission.
Senior Trey Dunn gave the Patriots the lead for good as he lasered a shot past freshman goalie Jose Rodriguez of the Starfires (2-6), and Jeremiah Cotherman made it a quick turnaround with a score off a Johnson assist just 22 seconds later.
Lavy pulled the Starfires within one, but Johnson scored on a pass from Poole with 8:39 and Johnson added a pair of scores in the next 2:11 for the final margin.
"Our aggressiveness toward that last 20 minutes, when we did get the lead, came back to us," said Bailey. "We started going after them."
The Patriots have outscored its opponents 37-10 on the season.
"I'm happy with it," added Bailey of the 7-0 start. "The kids deserve it. We're capable of more. The sky's the limit. We'll find out against Bellmont exactly where we're at."
Horn's pair of late goals finished off a hat trick as he scored on three of his four shots on goal. Johnson had two assists to go along with his score, and Dunn added an assist as well.
It was another difficult day for the Jay County girls, who are still looking for their first victory at 0-5-1. But, there was a positive point.
It came 14 minutes into the second half, when the Patriots were awarded a free kick from just outside the left corner of the 18-yard box. Junior Kayla Phillips sent the kick over the SAHS defense, and the ball deflected off goalie Katrina Hawkins' hands and hit the cross bar. Several JCHS players charged the goal, and Lindsey Moser knocked it into the goal with a header.
"We were hurting. We needed that pretty bad," said Patriot coach Ed Wellman, whose team had been shut out in each of its previous three games. "Kayla Phillips put a real nice ball from just beyond the 18. Our girls attacked the goal good and Lindsey was able to get her head on it and knock it in. The girls did a real nice job of being aggressive on a free kick like that.
"That was big for them. That was huge. We needed a goal."
Jay County's last goal was in a 3-2 loss Aug. 23 against Huntington North.
Still, South Adams was in control, having taken a 3-0 first half lead and pushing it to 4-0 on a Mackenzie Moser tally before the Patriots got on the board. The Starfires, who are now 6-1, push to ahead by a 5-1 score and then got a pair of goals from Ashton Morgan in a span of just 1:15 for the final margin.
Morgan had a hat trick to lead South Adams.
"The first half was better than the second," said SAHS coach Charles Wendel. "We got kind of sloppy in the second half. They were just getting too confident I think. Overall, we're getting better."
Jay County had just four shots on goal in all, one each by Phillips, Tiffany Huelskamp, Mallory Poole and Brianne Wellman. Mollie May and LeAnn Horn each finished with five saves.
"We played a pretty good team. This South Adams group has been together for quite a while. We were going up against a lot of experience," said Wellman. "I know I've been harping on that all year, that our inexperience is hurting us, but we're making steps. We're getting better. We started attacking a little better today. We started moving the ball across the field, switching fields. ...
"Defensively, we're doing a pretty good job. ... As soon as we learn to pressure the ball more and start to be proactive instead of reactive ... we'll see our play pick up."
