MUNCIE - It got on track at the right time.
The Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team went just 4-21 during the regular season, but came up big Wednesday with a 12-5 victory over Peru in the opening round of the Muncie Sectional.
Four Jay County High School players, hitting consecutively at the top of the order, accounted for eight of J-R's runs, eight of its 12 hits and five RBIs.
Junior Trey Dunn paced the quartet by going 4-for-5, with two of his hits coming in the six-run third inning. He scored twice and drove in a run.
Thomas McCowan had two hits, including a triple, three runs, and an RBI, Andy Hughes finished with one hit, two runs and two RBIs and Tony McCowan notched a single, a run and an RBI.
Also, Luke Morrison added two hits and two RBIs, and Cody Wilson scored twice.
Hughes, a 2007 JCHS graduate, went the distance on the mound, allowing five runs - four earned - on seven hits. He racked up nine strikeouts while walking just one batter.
Patriots third at camp
The Jay County High School varsity cheerleading squad brought home several awards last week from the Universal Cheer Association camp at the University of Kentucky.
The Patriots finished third in the camp championships in the small varsity division at the conclusion of the three-day event. Wisconsin Lutheran took first place, and Russell (Kentucky) finished second.
JCHS also received blue ribbons and the spirit stick award during daily evaluations. Senior Amanda Johnson earned the All-Star Award, and she and classmate Erika Hunt were invited to return as UCA instructors next year.
The varsity squad consists of seniors Megan Adams, Amanda Pinkerton, Johnson and Hunt, juniors Jessica Beaty, Dannie Grant, Stephy Morgan and Gabi Stout and sophomores Kyla Baldwin, Kari Hemmelgarn, Kami Hicks, Michelle Landfair and Lexie Rowles.
Ludy in showcase
Josh Ludy, a Jay County High School senior, has been selected to take part in the 2007 East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase.
Ludy will represent the New York Yankees at the event held at Joker Marchant Stadium, the Detroit Tigers' spring training field in Lakeland, Florida. Five other Major League Baseball organizations will also field teams for the four-day, round-robin tournament.[[In-content Ad]]
