Patriots rally past Spartans

JCHS Roundup

Falling behind doesn’t scare Jay County so much.

The Patriots trailed Connersville by six runs in the second game of their double-header Saturday, only to come back to complete the sweep with a 10-7 victory. They won the first game on the strength of another stellar performance by Josh Jellison with a 1-0 shutout.

Jay County (7-0) coughed up three runs in the fourth inning of game two to fall behind 7-1, but immediately cut the deficit.

Chad Keen and Matt Champ singled, and Heath Williams followed with a double in the bottom of the fourth inning. All three came around to score, and Nick Timmerman added another run by scoring on a Chris Myers single after he lead off the fifth inning with a double.

Williams did his leadoff job in the sixth with a single, and Cameron Hummel and Adam Homan took care of the rest. Already with a game-winning home run to his credit this season, Hummel hit a blast to tie the game at 7-7.

Homan followed with his fourth homer of the year to put the Patriots up by one. They added a few more runs, and Jellison came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

Mike Smith, Chad Keen and Cameron Hummel each took up part of the pitcher duties, with Hummel earning the victory. He allowed one run on one hit while walking two in one inning of work.

Williams and Homan each had three hits in the game, with Williams driving in three runs. Bailey, Keen and Champ each had a pair of hits, and Hummel added three RBIs.

The first game was much more simple for Class 3A No. 9 Jay County.

Williams singled to start the first inning, stole second and scored for a 1-0 lead. Jellison went on to pitch a four-hit shutout, striking out eight in the process.

The win improved him to 3-0 on the year.

Hummel finished the game 2-for-2, and Chris Myers had the only other hit for the Patriots.

Jay County will try to continue the unbeaten streak when it plays at Norwell Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Patriots rally for split

Not to be outdone by their baseball counterparts, the Jay County softball team used a seventh-inning rally in the second game of a double-header against Richmond Saturday to pull out a 7-6 win. The Patriots lost the first game 8-2.

Down by one heading into the seventh inning, Katie Alberson lead off with a single only to be forced out at second on a Renae Laux fielder’s choice. Stephanie Imel knocked the second of her two doubles on the day to tie the game an place herself as the winning run on second.

Nikki Ingram singled to move Imel to third, but Ashleigh Myers hit a liner to the shortstop for the second out. Calah Redwine came up with a clutch hit, blooping one between a convoy of four Red Devil players in shallow right-center field.

The single scored Imel with the winning run.

It was the second run of the game for Imel, and Laux also scored twice. Imel had a pair of hits, Alberson had two hits and Ingram drove in two runs.

Jenni Chittum earned the win in her first start, allowing six runs — four earned — on 11 hits. She struck out two and walked six.

Jay County (2-5) gave up five runs in the first inning of the first contest and never recovered. Ashleigh Myers took the loss, allowing eight runs — five earned — on 12 hits.

Imel had three hits in the contest for the Patriots, and Redwine followed with two. Imel and Laux scored the only runs.

Imel finished the day 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles and a triple to lead the Jay County offense. The defense was also much improved with two errors in the first game and none in the second.

Ashley Cook gave the Jay County junior varsity softball team the lift it needed. The Patriots lost the opener of a double-header against Richmond Saturday 18-8, but Cook came back to toss a shutout in the second contest as they pulled off a split with a 10-0 victory.

Cook struck out three batters in the second game for Jay County. The victory was the first of the season for the JV team, which is now 1-3.
