Patriots rally past the Bears

PARKER CITY - A two-run top of the seventh inning Tuesday lifted the Jay County High School softball team to a 6-5 victory over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.

Danielle Wellman powered the Patriots' offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. She also drove in two runs.

Rachelle Jackson went 2-for-3 with a couple of runs and a stolen base, and Brittney Watson had a hit and two RBIs. Randa Gillespie scored twice as a courtesy-runner for Wellman.

Jackson also picked up her fourth win of the year for the Patriots (7-13) while striking out three batters in seven innings. She gave up five runs - four earned - on 12 hits and four walks.

Six runners awarded

FORT RECOVERY - Six members of the Fort Recovery girls track team were among 15 Indians who were named to the All-Midwest Athletic Conference Academic team.

The award goes to athletes who are a sophomore, junior or senior, earn a varsity letter and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better.

Holly Brunswick, Olivia Schwieterman, Alexis Sutter, Amber Heitkamp, Abby Huelskamp and Alison Tobe won the award from the FRHS girls track team. Five softball players - Shelby Brunswick, Olivia Thien, Josie Guggenbiller, Stacy Gehle and Andi Sutter - also picked up the honor.

Boys track athletes Ryan Heitkamp, Josh Pohl and Aaron Vagedes earned the award, as well as baseball player Jared Kahlig.

JC netters fall

ALEXANDRIA - Jay County's girls tennis team dropped its regular-season finale Tuesday 4-1 to the Alexandria Monroe Tigers.

Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth earned the only win for the Patriots, who will meet eight-time defending champion Marion in sectional semifinal action Friday, at No. 2 doubles.

They fought off Alexis Beane and Mary Griffin for a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

In the other doubles match, Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman lost 6-3, 6-4 to Lauren Miller and Aubrey Peppers.

Mariah Clark dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Michelle McFerran at No. 1 singles, and Kayla Martin lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to Bri Hensley. In the No. 3 singles match, Alyssa Rigby lost 6-3, 6-1 to Mariah Walker.

Brittany White and Joni Degler each picked up junior varsity victories for the Patriots before the match was halted because of rain.

Judan places second

Portland's Judan Judo club hosted the Indiana Open State Championships Saturday and finished second among 30 teams as 13 of its athletes turned in first place efforts.

Lindsay Aker, Kelsi Bostic, Amanda Buell, Maria Chan, Maricela Chan, Caleb Culy, Crosby Heniser, Payton Heniser, Casey Kenney, Gabrielle Minnich, Nicholas Patterson, Conner Ray, Damion Resler and Brayden Sprunger were all champions at the tournament, which included 280 competitors from seven states.

Second-place finishes came from Lindsay Aker, Kendra Bickel, Gavin Billington, Betsi Gagle, Adam Haffner, Nicholas Patterson, Spencer Patterson, Kyler Nally, Sebastin Solis and Zachary Wilhelm. Placing third were Allen Mast, Jimmy Miller, Abigail Muhlenkamp, Ethan Solis, Brayden Sprunger and Adam Wilhelm.[[In-content Ad]]
