Patriots rally to stay undefeated

CONVERSE — Trailing with just two events to go, the Patriots came fighting back to keep their undefeated season alive.
Ashley Mark, Julie Valentine and Taylor Campbell finished second, third and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke to pull the Jay County High School girls swim team into a tie with host Oak Hill. Anne Vormohr, Sophie Bader, Katy Smeltzer and Caitlin Mark followed by destroying the field in the 400 freestyle relay to secure a 92-90 victory over the Golden Eagles.
The JCHS boys team fell to 0-3 with a 105-80 defeat.
Bader and Vormohr each won a pair of individual events to lead the Patriot girls (6-0), with Vormohr taking the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 2.62 seconds, and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.81. Bader’s victories came in times of 2:16.33 in the 200 freestyle and 1:00.07 in the 100 butterfly.
Katy Smeltzer added a victory in the 100 freestyle in 57.47 for Jay County, which trailed by 12 midway through the meet. Vormohr, Bader, Smeltzer and Ashley Mark teamed to take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.87.
Junior Josh Lykins won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.73 and the 100 butterfly in 57.03 for the Patriot boys team while James Keen took­ the 50 freestyle in 23.36 and the 100 backstroke in 57.49.
Sok Vormohr added a victory with a time of 2:24.63 in the 200 individual medley.
Eagles win pair
DUNKIRK — The
West Jay Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team dominated the visiting Wes-Del Warriors 45-6 Tuesday to stay unbeaten. The eighth graders won 46-31.
Cole Stigleman and Holton Hill each scored eight points for the Eagle seventh graders, who pushed their perfect mark to 5-0. Garrett Rodgers and Connor Davis added six points apiece.
Dakota Grove tallied 14 points to power the WJMS eighth grade squad. Andrew Trewyn joined him in double figures with 10 points.

East Jay splits
UNION CITY — East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team picked up a 40-25 victory Tuesday over host West Side. The seventh grade squad fell 35-21.
Jay Houck tallied 13 points for the eighth grade Chiefs, who improved to 3-1. Alec Lewis followed with seven points.
Noah Hummel paced the seventh grade team (0-4) with nine points. Ethan Myers scored five points.
