Patriots rally to victory

LYNN — Even an opening-game loss couldn’t slow down the Patriots.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team picked up its sixth straight win Thursday, bouncing back for a 15-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22 victory over the host Randolph Southern Rebels.
Hannah Ainsworth racked up 32 assists, 16 digs and two aces for the Patriots, who improved to 15-12. Alyssa Rigby followed Ainsworth with 14 digs to go along with a team-best nine service points.
Mariah Hornaday totaled 18 kills and four blocks, and Maria Murphy added 12 kills. Malarie Houck scored eight service points.
JCHS started its streak with a win Sept. 26 over Winchester, swept its three matches at Saturday’s Jay County Classic and added victories over Fort Recovery and Randolph Southern this week.

Chiefs tie Driver
A scoreless second half and overtime left the East Jay Middle School seventh grade football team and the visiting Winchester Driver Hawks in an 8-8 tie Thursday.
Driver reached the end zone on its first possession and added the two-point conversion for the early lead. The Chiefs (2-2-1) responded with a 4-yard scoring run by Jason Schlosser, and Brian Stancliffe converted on a run to tie the game.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, with Dimetri Taylor of EJMS recovering a fumble on Driver’s overtime possession to end the game.

EJ spikers split
MUNCIE — The East Jay seventh grade volleyball team rolled to a 25-12, 25-16 victory Thursday over Muncie Wilson. The eighth grade team fell, 25-22, 13-25, 15-13.
Gracie Runkle led the EJMS seventh graders (13-6) with nine service points and five aces.Audrey Shreve also had nine service points, Abby Barcus notched six kills and Lizzy Schoenlein finished with four kills and four aces.
Mallory Marshall had nine service points, five aces and three kills for the eighth grade squad (11-9). Savanna Mace scored eight service points and notched three kills.

Eagle boys fall
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s boys cross country team fell 22-39 Thursday to the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears. Union City West Side did not have enough runners for a full team.
Kyler Karvel led the Eagles, finishing in third place with Tanner Craw sixth and Quinton Huggett seventh. Travis Barton placed 13th for WJMS, and Jake Myers was 16th.[[In-content Ad]]
