Patriots roll over Anderson

ANDERSON - The Patriots got a North Central Conference team in the tournament draw Thursday morning. Later in the day, they beat another.

Jay County High School's softball team, which will open the sectional tournament Tuesday against Marion, smacked 16 hits in a 10-4 victory over the Anderson Indians.

Five different players had two or more hits for the Patriots (6-5), who jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed.

Tiffany Davis led the effort, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs. Fellow senior Brittany Mann also had three hits to go along with two runs and two RBIs.

Kendra Younger added two hits and two RBIs, and Pazia Speed and Danielle Wellman each totaled two hits and two runs.

Davis got the win, allowing four runs on seven hits and seven walks.

Jay rallies over MC

Trey Dunn's double in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday lifted the Jay County baseball team to a 9-8 victory over the visiting Muncie Central Bearcats.

Central had an 8-6 lead after scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning, but could not hold it.

The Patriots (6-8) pulled within a run, and then walked off with a victory when Dunn came through with his two-out, game-winning hit.

Dunn finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, and Billy Wellman had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Mike Masters drove in three runs, and Jon Pettus scored twice.

Masters got the win, despite having two unearned runs scored against him in the top of the seventh. He walked two batters, but did not allow a hit.

May wins hurdles

FORT RECOVERY - Abby May won the only championship for Fort Recovery Thursday as it hosted the Junior High Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.

May's win helped the Indian girls to a seventh-place finish in the 10-team field with 35 points. Minster won with 131.

The Tribe boys were eighth with 33 points while Coldwater (133.5) ran away with the title.

May went unchallenged in the 200-meter hurdles with her winning time of 30.5 seconds. No other runner broke the 33-second mark.

She also finished fourth in the 100 dash in 13.4.

Josh Pohl was the top runner for the FRMS boys, placing second in the 1,600-run in 5-minutes, 4.6 seconds. He was also third in the 800 run at 2:22.4.

Other top finishes came from Mitch Vagedes (fourth - discus) for the boys, and Sam Tobe (fifth - 800 run) and Jessica Vogel (fifth - 1,600 run) for the girls.

Byers leads WJMS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jessyca Byers posted the best score for the West Jay Middle School archery team, which placed 25th out of 65 teams May 8 and 9 at the National Archery in the Schools Program national tournament.

West Jay finished with a total score of 3,061. The championship team was Alabama's Ashville Middle School, which scored 3,350.

Byers' total of 273 ranked her 46th out of 561 female middle school competitors. Patsy Banister, from Kentucky's Trigg County Middle School, won with 288.

Jesse Finnerty scored 263 for WJMS, and Chase Louck finished at 258.[[In-content Ad]]
