Patriots roll over Wapahani

SELMA — After winning just once in the first three weeks of the season, the Patriots have strung together four wins in the last eight days.
Five different players scored for the Jay County High School boys soccer team Tuesday in a 5-2 victory over the host Wapahani Raiders.
The Patriots, who are now 5-2-3, scored the game’s first four goals, including one by Colton McCombs with just four minutes after the opening kick. Alex Abbott assisted on the McCombs goal, and then scored one of his own at the 23-minute mark of the opening half.
Jacob Schlosser added a third goal later in the first half, and Aaron Loy scored on an assist from Alex Dunn eight minutes into the second.
Dunn cashed in the final goal off an assist by Schlosser.
Brennan Krieg had five saves in the win over Wapahani, which tallied both of its goals in the final 17 minutes, and Austin Cowan added one.

Golfers drop two
WARREN — The Patriot girls finish last in a three-team match at Dogwood Glen, posting a score of 220 to trail Blackford (186) and host Southern Wells (211).
Brittany Stevens set the pace for Jay County (7-9) with three bogeys on the way to a 51.
Alysia Fennig parred the 294-yard, par-4 eighth hole and finished with a 53. Whitney Gray added a 55.
Carly Weeks-Boy led Blackford with a 43 to earn medalist honors, and Sadie Herr turned in the top score for Southern Wells with a 47.
Madison McCormick completed the JCHS team score with a 61. Katlin Petro shot 63, and Cortney Myers finished at 66.

Chiefs top WJMS
DUNKIRK — East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team scored a 25-9, 25-9 victory Tuesday over the host West Jay Eagles. The seventh grade Chiefs won 23-25, 25-17, 15-11.
West Jay won the sixth grade match 25-11, 25-15.
Sierra Trobridge powered the East Jay eighth graders (4-1) with 10 points, five aces and two assists. Gabby Hart had nine points, including eight aces, and Kylie Osborne totaled four kills.
Abby Barcus set the pace for the EJMS seventh graders with six kills. Kaylee Inman totaled five points and two aces for the EJMS sixth grade team.

Simmons breaks mark
HARTFORD CITY — Katie Simmons broke the Jay County High School girls cross country school record Saturday as the Patriots finished seventh out of 18 teams at the Blackford Invitational. The boys team was 17th out of 18.
Simmons was second in the 122-runner field in 19 minutes, 35.4 seconds. She shattered the JCHS mark of 19:44.4 set by Aly Miller at the 2007 regional meet.
Eme Miller, Aly’s sister, followed Simmons in 16th with a time of 20:32. Abigail Johnson was 36th in 21:24 followed by Liz Lennartz (55th – 22:19) and Miranda Gerber (78th – 23:11).
Dylan Cope finished in 18:22 to lead the boys in 64th place. Stephen Scott was 92nd in 19:05 ahead of Chaz Carroll (109th – 20:12), Jacob Nichols (115th – 21:23) and Wiley Young (120th – 24:42).

Freshmen fall
PONETO — Jay County’s freshman football team dropped a 32-6 decision Monday to the host Southern Wells Raiders.
The Patriots fell behind 32-0 at the half before holding Southern Wells scoreless in the second half. Nick Clemens completed several passes to Cameron Kunkle on the lone JCHS scoring drive, and reached the end zone on a quarterback sneak.[[In-content Ad]]
