Patriots score two big wins over Highland (05/10/04)

JCHS Roundup

The Retters came out in full force Saturday as part of a huge effort by the Jay County baseball team in a couple of wins — 7-5 and 16-15 in eight innings — over the Anderson Highland Scots.

John and Rhett Retter combined for seven hits, and the Patriots hit four home runs in the first game to improve to 7-6 overall and even their mark at 3-3 in the Olympic Athletic Conference. They are over .500 for the first time since April 13, and could join a four-way tie for the conference title if they can sweep a home-in-home pair against Muncie Southside May 18 and 19.

A double-header sweep looked unlikely as the Scots scored nine times in the fourth inning of the first game for a 13-3 lead. However, Jay County made a dramatic comeback in the fifth inning.

With two outs with the game on the line in the top of the fifth the Patriots scored nine runs, and the game was tied at 15-15 after seven frames.

The Patriots scored in the eighth to win the contest.

Heath Williams hit his fifth and sixth home runs of the season in the contest, finishing 3-for-3. He scored four times, drove in four runs and stole a base.

John Retter hit his first career home run, finished 2-for-2, scored two runs and added two RBIs. Rhett Retter was 21-for-4 with a triple, three runs and an RBI.

Chad Keen had his second straight great game at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run. He scored once and drove in two runs.

Trent Bailey also had three hits, four RBIs and two runs, and Mike Smith had two hits, two RBIs and a run.

Keen earned the win in three innings of relief. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out two batters.

Josh Shatto allowed two runs in the first inning of the second game, but the Patriots posted four in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. The Scots scored twice in the seventh inning, but it was not enough to overtake visiting Jay County.

Shatto struck out eight batters in the victory. He allowed seven runs — three earned — on nine hits and one walk.

John Retter was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second win. He doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.

Eric Somers also finished 3-for-3 — all doubles — scored twice and drove in one run.

Adam Brandt had two hits, including a double and an RBI, and Bailey singled and drove in two runs.

The Patriots will need the momentum as they host Blackford (17-1) — second in last week’s Class 3A poll — Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

JC netters snap slump

Jay County’s tennis team snapped a nine-match losing streak Saturday with a 3-2 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

The Patriots got a big comeback from Angie Stults at No. 3 singles to take the team victory. She dropped the first set, then trailed 3-2 in the second before making her run.

Stults lost just one game the rest of the way, taking four in a row to come back and win the second set. She then stormed through the third for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Erin St. Myers and Julie Sours were dominant at No. 1 doubles as they improved to 8-2 on the season. They defeated Jennifer Benavides and Jamie Char 6-1, 6-1.

Chelsea Reff and Brianne Morrical just barely avoided a trip to a tiebreaker in the second set to knock off Beth Kimbrell and Jordan McIntire 6-1, 7-5. It marked the first varsity victory for Morrical.

Jay County also won the junior varsity match 3-2 by taking all three singles matches.

Jenae Horn led the way at No. 1 singles with an 8-2 win over Courtney Williams. Amanda Hicks won at No. 2 doubles 8-1, and Carissa Wilkins topped Mindy Beaty at No. 3 singles 8-0.

Lauren Budde and Ada Bebi lost To Jennifer Osborne and Jennifer Caudill 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, and Brittany Lewis and Chatchanok Sririthara dropped by an 8-3 score to Ashley Garrett and Stephanie Garrett.

The Patriots will try to put together back-to-back wins when they visit Shenandoah Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Jay golfers stumble

The Jay County golf team did not have its best day Saturday, finishing in sixth place at the Delaware Invitational Saturday with a score of 354.

Yorktown placed first with a 310 and Muncie Central and Wapahani tied for second at 337. The Patriots had defeated both Wapahani and Delta (fourth place - 340) earlier this year.

Jesse Shawver had the top score for Jay County with an 84, and Tyler Johnston was two back with an 86. Alex Hunt shot a 91, Adam Foster finished with a 93 and Nathan McClung posted a 98.

The Patriots will look to rebound and keep their undefeated dual meet record in tact when they visit South Adams Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Hess 2nd in state

Kurtis Hess placed second as members of the Patriot Wrestling Club took part in the Indiana State Wrestling Association Greco-Roman state meet this weekend.

Hess finished 3-1 in his division. He has now qualified for nationals in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

Trent Bash went 2-2 on the day and placed ninth in his division, and Kasey Kenney was 0-2 and finished in eighth.

Grile wins three

Adam Grile had a great evening Friday at the Blackford Invitational.

Grile won three events, leading the boys team to a fourth-place finish with 76 points. Jill Roughia had the lone win for the girls team as it placed sixth with 33 points.

New Haven won the boys title with 118 points. Anderson Highland was second with 105 points, and the host Bruins were third with 104.

The Bruins scored 116 points to win the girls competition, and Anderson Highland was second with 103.

Grile paced a good showing in the high jump for Jay County. He matched teammate Kyle Carpenter, who placed second, at a height of five feet, 10 inches.

Grile also took the 110-meter hurdles in 15.65 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 42.25 seconds.

David Stith was second in the shot put at 52 feet, one inch, and Lucas McBride placed second in the long jump at 20 feet, 3 3/4 inches. Jay County also placed second in the 4x100-meter relay.

Roughia earned the only win for the girls team, which also had no second-place finishes. She won the 800-meter run by nearly four seconds in 2-minutes, 27.83 seconds.

Jay County was third in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:28.89.

It will visit Muncie Central Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
