Jay County boys tennis coach Barry Weaver said in the preseason he thought his team would have a chance at breaking the school record for wins. His players proved him right, and they did it on his birthday.

The Patriots picked up their 11th win of the year Thursday, breaking the mark set by the 2002 squad with a 4-1 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

The win also forged a three-way tie for first place in the Olympic Athletic Conference as Jay County, Connersville and Anderson Highland all finished at 2-1.

“It’s a good day. Not bad for an old guy turning older,” said Barry Weaver, who has coached the team since its inception, of the record-setting birthday win presented to him. “Coming (into the season) you never know. ... The kids have done a great job of getting along, working hard at practice, keeping focused, and it’s great because right now we rely on leadership from our seniors and our young kids every match its somebody else stepping up and doing a good job and winning matches.”

Kurt Hess, who went 18-2 playing No. 2 singles on the record-setting 2002 squad, cruised to his 13th victory of the season over David Guiden.

Hess swept the opening set and grabbed a 5-1 lead in the second. Guiden hit some great winners as he served his way to victory in the second set’s seventh game, but Hess served out the match in the eighth.

The senior is now 13-4 on the season. He is by far the Patriots’ career leader in wins with a 61-16 career mark.

“I thought Kurt did a good job after being manhandled the other night 0 and 0 by (Zach) Ervin over there at Delta, but that’s Kurt,” said Weaver. “He’s never going to get way down on himself. He’s just consistent and he goes out there and tries to play the best he can every night.”

Tyler Rigby and Randy Evans, the only other seniors on the team, gave up three games in the first set, but owned the second. They built a 5-0 lead on Shawn Haisley and Will Hamilton and finally finished the Southside pair off on their fourth break-point try of the sixth game on a double fault for the 6-3, 6-0 win.

Evans said the key to the team’s success this year has been “practice. I don’t think we’ve goofed around one practice this year,” he added. He and Rigby, who made it to the state Sweet 16 in 2004, have a 14-3 record on the year.

Also posting wins for Jay County (11-3) against the Rebels were a trio of first-year varsity players.

Freshman Phil Powell served out the first set at love, repeatedly taking advantage of errors from Southside’s Lynel Curt. He went on to a 6-3, 6-1 win to improve to 9-7 on the season.

Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan earned their sixth victory, topping Nick Albertson and Cody Norvell 6-2, 6-2.

“Phil Powell did a nice job tonight,” said Weaver. “He won pretty simply. (Curd) was pretty athletic and did a nice job of covering the court, but Phil kept it in play.

“The first year guys have really come in and stepped into spots where we really need some help. They’ve done a great job of staying with it.”

Southside’s lone victory of the evening came at No. 2 singles where Kyle Holt defeated Josh Ludy 6-2, 6-1. Ludy is now 9-8 this year.

Jay County will have a chance to extend its record in its season finale Wednesday at home against Bellmont. Sectional play begins at Marion Thursday, where the Patriots will try to reclaim the title after winning crowns in 2000 and 2002.

Junior varsity

Jay County won all four junior varsity matches against the Rebels, with Jason Crouch posting an 8-1 victory over Brandon Willard at No. 1 singles to lead the way.

Adam Horn earned his first tiebreaker victory, defeating Skylar Furney 8-7 (7-2) at No. 2 singles. James Heare stomped Ryan Brand 8-2 at No. 3 singles.

In doubles action it was Crouch and Heare topping Adam Maxwell and Kevin Robey 8-4.

Tuesday vs. Delta

MUNCIE — It was just a detour on the way to Thursday’s record, but the Patriots had a humbling experience Tuesday.

They visited the ninth-ranked Delta Eagles and were sent home with a 7-0 defeat.

No. 1 singles player Kurtis Hess was run off the court 6-0, 6-0 by Zach Ervin, who Jay County coach Barry Weaver called “the best high school tennis player I have ever seen.”

Tyler Rigby and Randy Evans took their first dual meet loss of the year, 6-1, 6-2 to Steve Hopkins and Drew DeHaven. In other doubles matches Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan fell to Austin Anderson at Ian Brooke 6-0, 6-3 and James Heare and Adam Horn took a 6-1, 6-0 defeat.

Josh Ludy dropped his No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-1 to Josh Chambers. At No. 3 singles Phil Powell lost 6-0, 6-0 to Dan Klingenberg, and at No. 4 singles Jason Crouch lost 6-0, 6-2 to Joseph Taylor.[[In-content Ad]]
