Patriots sixth at Marion (02/09/04)

Local Roundup

Jay County finished a bit lower than it might have hoped, and may have suffered an even more devastating loss.

The Patriot gymnastics team had just an average day Saturday, finishing sixth at the 11-team Marion Invitational Saturday. It finished with a total of 95.35 points, while defending state champion Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won the meet with 109.825 points.

Jay County, which could have finished as high as third with its best score of the year, had its best and worst results on the floor exercise.

Hannah Williams gave the Patriots their top score in any event, finishing fifth with a 9.15 on the floor. But, on the same event, they may have lost junior Lacey Grider.

Grider completed her first tumbling pass, but crumbled to the ground after sticking the landing. She injured her left knee, with what was likely a tear of her ACL.

She will have an MRI today to determine the severity of the injury.

With Grider out, Jay County’s depth will be tested this week as it hosts Delta today at 6:30 p.m. and Muncie Central Wednesday before heading to Connersville for the Olympic Athletic Conference meet Saturday.

Freshman Kristin Brown had the next best score on the floor for the Patriots, placing in a five-way tie for 19th with an 8.15. Freshman Caitlin Dunn scored a 7.25.

Williams was the top Patriot in every event. She finished eighth on the vault with an 8.95, 10th on the balance beam with a 7.85 and 15 on the uneven parallel bars with a 7.7

She was ninth in the all-around with a 33.65 total.

Before her injury, Grider trailed Williams on the beam with a 7.7, and Amanda Knight scored a 7.55.

Knight added an 8.45 on the vault, and a 6.925 on the bars. Brittany Bauman had an 8.4 on the vault, and Lacey Thornburg finished with a 7.275 on the bars.

Jay freshmen win

The Jay County freshman boys basketball team held off Fort Recovery for a 39-34 victory Saturday.

The Patriots jumped ahead to a 13-4 lead in the first quarter. Fort Recovery rallied in the second half, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Casey Waters paced Jay County (10-5) with nine points, Ryan Rogers had eight, and Rhett Retter added seven.

Matt Tobe scored 10 points for Fort Recovery. Tony Diller finished with eight, and Kraig Wendel had six.

Jay scores wins

The Jay County Winter Swim Team scored a host of victories at the New Castle Invitational this weekend.

Cori Vormohr paced the team with five victories. Annie Vormohr followed her older sister with four wins, and Justin Klopp added a pair.

Each scoring one win apiece were Laura Bowen, Richard Osterholt, Alex Habegger, Kelci Reed and Lance VanSkyock.[[In-content Ad]]
