Patriots slam Blackford, improve to 6-5 (09/16/04)

HARTFORD CITY — The Jay County boys tennis team is back above .500 after another victory over a sectional rival. The Patriots smacked the Blackford Bruins 4-1 Wednesday, improving to 6-5 on the year.

They also beat Marion 4-1 in the 2004 season opener in their only other match against a sectional opponent.

Jay County swept the doubles matches for the second straight night, this time by matching scores.

The No. 1 duo of Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby topped Bret Ashley and Travis Stroud 7-5, 6-2 to improve to 12-2 on the year. Adam Arnold and Travis Smith won by the same 7-5, 6-2 score over Brian Bradford and Nic Baughey and are now 8-6 this season.

Matthias Scherer won his second straight match at No. 2 singles, evening his season mark at 2-2. He topped Andy Langdon 6-0, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles Kurtis Hess bounced back from just his second loss of the year, fighting off Tom Ehrhart 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). No. 3 singles player Jeff Sims came close to getting his first win of the season, but couldn’t pull it off in the third set in a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 loss to Michael Estep.

Jay County dropped the lone junior varsity match of the night as James Heare and Thomas McCowan fell 8-3 in doubles action to Wes Ford and Mitch Glentzer.

The Patriots play for the third straight evening as they host Winchester today at 4:30 p.m.

JC back to .500

DECATUR — Jay County’s boys soccer team slipped back to the .500 mark with a 3-2 loss to the Bellmont Braves Wednesday.

The game was tied at two at halftime, but Bellmont got the lone second-half goal at the 23-minute mark and held on for the victory.

Chad Keen scored the first goal of the game, hitting a curving shot from the left side in the 14th minute. The Braves scored twice to take the lead, but they tackled Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman to give Jay County (5-5) a penalty kick.

Trent Bailey took the kick and scored to tie the game with five minutes to go in the first half, but Bellmont grabbed the victory after the intermission.

The Patriot junior varsity team also lost to the Braves, 3-0.

Jay County will host a soccer double-header against Centerville Saturday, with the girls playing at 10 a.m. followed by the boys game at noon.

Chiefs celebrate sweeps

PORTLAND — Wednesday night was sweeps night for East Jay’s cross country teams as they took the top five spots in all three races. The girls team, the boys eighth grade team and the boys seventh grade team all won by a matching score of 15-40.

Kylie Wellman had the most dominant effort of the night, winning the girls race by nearly a minute. She finished in 12-minutes, 37 seconds, which was 55 seconds faster than second-place teammate Tiffany Helms.

Kyle Simmons and Patrick Johnson also turned in big wins, in the eighth and seventh grade races respectively. They both won by 44 seconds.

Wellman and Helms were followed by Cassie Laux (13:35), Katie Butcher (13:43) and Leah Wellman (13:44).

Isaac Poole was second behind Simmons, running in 12:05. Jordan Moser was third (12:12), followed by Joey Franks (12:24) and Steven Kelly (12:29).

Eric Homan had the No. 2 time in the seventh grade race at 12:47. Ben Brandt (13:17), Brad Horn (13:23) and Preston Roberts (13:25) rounded out the top five.

Open house

Jay County High School is holding a Patriot Power House open house prior to Friday night’s football game against Muncie Southside. The Power House, which is located in the football complex, will be open from 6 to 7 p.m., with kickoff to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Winter swim

Practices for the Jay County Winter Swim Team will begin Monday, Oct. 4.

Practice will be at 6:15 p.m. at the Jay County High School pool. The team is open to swimmers of all ages, but they must have previous swimming experience.
