Patriots split at Central

MUNCIE — Chance Fuller and Morton Garringer pulled out a second-set tiebreaker win to avoid a third set and give the Patriots a second-place finish.
Jay County High School’s boys tennis team was the runner-up at the three-team Muncie Central Invitational, defeating the host Bearcats 3-2 after losing 5-0 to the Mount Vernon Marauders.
Fuller and Garringer finished off their No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) against Central to give the Patriots (2-4) the win. Other victories came from Landry Inman 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Derek Smith 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles.
Brad Leuthold fell just short at No. 2 singles, dropping a third-set tiebreaker in a 6-4, 6-7 (0-7), 7-6 (7-3) defeat. Tony Schwieterman and Jake Schwieterman lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.
Jay County won just 10 games combined against Mount Vernon, getting shut out at No. 1 and 2 singles.
Spikers 1-2 at invite
MONROEVILLE — The Patriot volleyball team went 1-2 at Saturday’s Heritage Invitational with its lone victory coming by a 25-22, 25-17 score over the New Haven Bulldogs. JCHS lost 25-20, 25-20 to the host Patriots and 25-22, 25-10 to the Canterbury Cavaliers.
Mariah Hornaday paced Jay County with 20 kills and 12 points, eight of which came in the win over sectional rival New Haven. She added eight digs, three blocks and three aces in the tournament.
Maria Murphy totaled 15 kills and 12 digs, and Malarie Houck finished with 19 points on 29-of-30 serving to go along with 12 digs. Alyssa Ribgy finished with a team-best 14 digs for JCHS (5-4).
Dunn selected
INDIANAPOLIS — Alex Dunn of Jay County was recently selected to be a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association Student Advisory Committee.
Dunn, who plays soccer, basketball and baseball for the Patriots, was selected as one of nine juniors who will serve on the 18-member committee.
School principals nominated athletes who attended the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference in June.
The committee meets four times a year and is in charge of developing the IHSAA Captain’s Handbook. Members also plan the student leadership conference and assist with awards ceremonies at IHSAA state championship events.[[In-content Ad]]
