Patriots split with ’Ole Miss (04/10/06)

The Jay County baseball team got solid pitching Saturday, but errors cost them a double-header sweep. The Patriots moved to 2-1, splitting a couple of games with the Mississinewa Indians 2-1 and 4-2.

All the scoring in the opening came in the fifth inning. After falling behind 1-0, Jay County took the lead on a two-run single by Cory Locke scoring Josh Shatto and Thomas McCowan.

Shatto earned the win as he struck out nine batters. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk as he went the distance.

The Patriots grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but went scoreless the rest of the way and lost thanks in part to four errors.

Josh Atkinson suffered the defeat despite striking out 10 batters. Half of the four runs against him were unearned.

Tony McCowan, Michael Jobe, Andy Hughes and Josh Selvey each had one hit.

Girls tennis falls

GREENFIELD — Jay County’s girls tennis team slipped to 0-3 Saturday with a second straight shutout, falling 5-0 to the Greenfield-Central Cougars.

The closest match for the Patriots came at No. 2 doubles, where Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp fell 6-3, 6-1 to Ariel Morelock and Tessa Tillett. In the other doubles match it was Greenfield-Central’s Stephanie Bell and Josie Potter winning by a 6-1, 6-2 score of Megan Knittle and Jessica Muhlenkamp.

In singles action, Angie Stults lost 6-2, 6-1 to Ellen Vowell, Megan Adams dropped 6-2, 6-0 to Keely Radosevic and Heather Ayers fell 6-0, 6-0 to Andrea Cole.

The Patriots also lost the junior varsity match, 6-1. Caitlin Dunn picked up the lone Jay County victory of the day, taking the No. 4 junior varsity singles match 8-0 of Rachel Kenny.

Golfers place 11th

YORKTOWN — It was a rough start for the new group of Jay County golfers Saturday as the Patriots finished 11th out of 12 teams at the Yorktown Invitational.

Jay County scored a 385, five strokes in front of Muncie Southside. The host Tigers won with a 295, and Delta was second at 310.

Gray Suman had the top score for Jay County with an 88, and Adam Gray shot a 92. They were followed by Josh Hall (97), James Brosher (108) and Justen Moser (118).

JV baseball splits pair

MUNCIE — The Patriot junior varsity baseball team won its season-opener 6-4 over the Muncie Central Bearcats, but dropped game two of the double-header Saturday 15-4.

Justin Mann and R.J. Fuller each tossed three innings in the victory, combining to strike out nine batters. Trey Dunn tossed the final inning, striking out two.

Billy Wellman finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, and Lance VanSkyock and Bryce DeBoy each added two hits.

Fuller, Wellman and Derek Barnett each pitched in the defeat. Wellman had two hits, including a three-run home run in the first inning, and Dunn also had a pair of hits.[[In-content Ad]]
