Patriots split with 'Ole Miss (04/11/05)

Local Roundup

GAS CITY — Seven was the lucky number Saturday. It just didn’t stick with one team.

Both games of the baseball double-header between Jay County and the Mississinewa Indians were decided by seven-run innings Saturday. Mississinewa scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth in game one for a 13-3 win, while the Patriots’ seven-run fourth in game two pushed them to a 10-8 victory.

Casey Waters had two of the five game-one hits for Jay County (2-2), which built a 3-0 lead before watching the Indians score 13 unanswered runs.

The Patriots trailed 8-1 in game two before tying the score in the fourth inning and getting a pair of runs for the win in the sixth. Chad Keen had two hits and four RBIs in that contest, and Rhett Retter notched three hits and two RBIs.

Josh Atkinson earned the win, allowing eight runs — three earned — on nine hits in seven innings. Josh Shatto took the loss in game one.

Stars blast Winchester

BERNE — Kayla Coblentz had an outstanding game Friday night, and she wasn’t the only one. The sophomore was one of seven Starfires to score at least twice as she finished with three runs and two RBIs in a 23-0, five-inning beating of the Winchester Golden Falcon softball team.

Kindle Inniger and Jordan Lehman each scored twice for South Adams, which posted an 11-run first inning and added eight more in the third. Renee Neuenschwander and Katie Nichols each scored three times, and Amber Fryback and Lacy Rhodes added two runs apiece.

Amber Melick earned the win by giving up just one hit as she struck out four and walked one in four scoreless innings.

Jay Co. golfers fifth

YORKTOWN — The Jay County boys golf team opened its season with a fifth-place finish at the 14-team Yorktown Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots finished with a 326, two strokes in front of Lebanon. The host Tigers (293) were first and defending state champion Zionsville (310) was second.

Tyler Johnson paced Jay County with a 3-over 75 at the tournament played at Elks Country Club in Muncie.

Ben Freeman shot an 80, Alex Hunt notched and 82 and Adam Foster finished off the team score with an 89. Nathan McClung added a 98.

Patriot JV splits

MUNCIE — The rally came late in the day, but it was enough for the Jay County junior varsity baseball team to come up with a split Saturday.

The Patriots dropped game one of their double-header against the Muncie Central Bearcats 9-6, but won the second 14-7.

Jay County (2-1) scored nine runs in the final two innings — seven in the sixth — to overcome the Bearcats in game two. Luke Goetz, Justin Mann, Tom McCowan, Caleb Carpenter, Michael Jobe, Tony McCowan and R.J. Fuller all had two hits in the contest.

Mann went the distance for the win, striking out 12.

Jobe suffered the game-one defeat as he started and worked five innings. Tom McCowan was a perfect 4-for-4 in the loss, and Goetz and Tony McCowan added two hits apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
