Patriots, Starfires draw favorable 1st-round games (01/30/06)

Girls basketball roundup

It was a weekend of good news for the Jay County and South Adams girls basketball teams.

The Starfires won just their third game of the season Saturday, and both walked away with favorable first-round match-ups in the Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament draw Sunday.

Jay County got an opening-round bye and will start sectional play Friday, Feb. 10 in the semifinal round against Mississinewa at 7:30 p.m. The host Indians have the worst record in the Class 3A grouping.

South Adams will have to play an opening round game, but will do so against one of the three teams it has beaten this year. The Starfires start at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Bluffton where they will take on Adams Central, the team they handed a 58-42 defeat Saturday.

Jay County came away with the good fortune of being on the opposite side of the bracket from Elwood, which was 12th in the Class 3A voting by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association last week. The Patriots would not have to meet the defending champions until the title game.

The rest of the sectional at Mississinewa pairs favored Elwood (17-3) against Tipton (7-12) in the opening game Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. Blackford (9-9) will play Delta (7-12) in Tuesday’s other first-round game at 7:30 p.m.

The Elwood/Tipton and Blackford/Delta winners will play in the first semifinal contest Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. to be followed by the Patriots (9-10) against Mississinewa (1-17). The championship game will be played Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Jay County defeated Mississinewa 60-35 Nov. 22. It also topped Blackford 54-27, and lost 58-51 to Elwood after leading by nine with six minutes to play. It will play at Delta in the regular-season finale for both teams Wednesday.

Elwood, which topped the Patriots 58-48 for the 2005 sectional crown, is a perfect 5-0 against sectional opponents this year. Delta is 1-1, Tipton is 1-1, Blackford is 1-3 and Mississinewa is 0-3.

The other first-round game in the Class 2A Bluffton sectional will be No. 10 Heritage (17-3) against Woodlan (7-12) Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. The contest between South Adams (3-13) and Adams Central (1-17) will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The Heritage/Woodlan and South Adams/Adams Central winners will meet in semifinal action Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. The other semifinal game between No. 8 Fort Wayne Harding (12-6) and Bluffton (8-10) will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game will be Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

South Adams finished 1-3 against sectional opponents this year, with the lone win coming against Adams Central. Harding went 2-0, Heritage was 5-1, Bluffton was 3-2, Woodlan finished 3-4 and Adams Central was 0-4.

In their win over Adams Central Saturday, the Starfires scored nearly as many points in the second half (40) as the Jets had in the entire game.

Leading 18-14 at halftime, South Adams put 21 points on the board in the third quarter as it picked up its first Allen County Athletic Conference win.

Erin McCollum paced the victory as she finished with 18 points. She finished a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Julie Muhlenkamp added 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Kayla Coblentz had nine points and five assists.

Adams Central was led in scoring by Jamie Schwartz (11 points), Natalie Yoder (10) and Ashley Manley (nine).

South Adams dropped the junior varsity contest 38-29. Morgan Ashton hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
