JCHS/SAHS softball
The Jay County and South Adams softball teams each lost at home Tuesday. After this morning's sectional draw, they are both hoping to earn a rematch.
The Patriots fell 4-3 to the Blackford Bruins, who were 16th in the Class 3A voting this week, and the Class 2A No. 6 Starfires dropped 3-1 to the Woodlan Warriors.
If the two area teams win their first-round sectional games, they will have a chance at redemption.
Both teams will play in the first round Monday, May 21, with Jay County meeting the host Tipton Blue Devils at 7 p.m. and South Adams taking on Harding at Heritage at 6:30 p.m.
The other first-round game at Tipton pits defending champion Blackford against Delta, with the winners meeting Tuesday, May 22, at 5 p.m. The other semifinal game Tuesday will be between Mississinewa and Elwood at 7 p.m., and the championship game will be Thursday, May 24, at 6 p.m.
Adams Central and defending champion Woodlan will open the Heritage tournament Monday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m., and that winner will meet the South Adams/Harding winner Tuesday, May 22, at 4:30 p.m. Bluffton and Heritage will play in the second semifinal game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and the championship will be Friday, May 25, at 5 p.m.
Jay County (11-6), which committed five errors Tuesday, fell behind 3-0 after the first inning and trailed Blackford the entire game. Shae Keller took the loss, giving up four runs - two earned - on four hits and five walks.
Kaelee Keller was responsible for most of the Patriot offense. She drove in Ashley Bunch and Lindsey Wellman with a single in the fourth inning, then walked, stole second and scored on Shae Keller's double in the sixth.
South Adams (12-5) and Woodlan each scored a single run in the fourth inning, but the Warriors added tallies in the fifth and seventh innings.
Amber Melick suffered just her second loss of the year as she surrendered three runs - two earned - on nine hits and one walk. She racked up 15 strikeouts in the defeat.
Ashton Morgan singled and scored a run, and Brooke Fox had a hit and an RBI. Melick and Jordan Lehman added one hit apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
