Patriots start with Elwood (02/20/06)

JCHS/SAHS boys basketball

If the Patriots are to reclaim their sectional title they will have to take the long road — again.

Jay County had not drawn the bye since moving to Class 3A in 2002, and the pattern continued when the Indiana High School Athletic Association held its boys basketball state tournament draw Sunday. The Patriots will play an opening round game Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Class 3A Blackford sectional against Elwood at 7:30 p.m.

South Adams also missed out on the bye and will open Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Class 2A Bluffton sectional against Fort Wayne Harding.

For Jay County (13-5), which will be looking for its third sectional title in four seasons, the first-round looks solid as it defeated Elwood (7-13) in this year’s season opening 68-41. The other opening-round game at Blackford will pit Delta (15-5) against Tipton (8-10) at 6 p.m.

The Jay County/Elwood and Delta/Tipton winners will meet in semifinal action Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. The other semifinal game will feature the host Bruins (2-17) against Mississinewa (12-7) at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game will be Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the Blackford sectional will stay put as the regional moves to Blackford this season from the previous site at NorthWood.

In other games against sectional opponents this year Jay County defeated Blackford twice, 61-27 and 72-42, beat Tipton 53-35, topped Mississinewa 46-45 and lost to Delta 46-44.

South Adams and Harding, tied for the best record in the grouping at 11-7, did not meet during the regular season. Their game will follow the opening-round contest between Adams Central (8-11) and host Bluffton (5-12), which is Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.

The South Adams/Harding and Adams Central/Bluffton winners will play in the semifinal round Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. The second semifinal contest will be Heritage (9-9) against Woodlan (1-16) at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game will be Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m., and the winner will advance to the South Adams regional.

Against sectional opponents this year, South Adams beat Bluffton twice, 48-37 and 39-37, topped Heritage 36-33, edged Bluffton 67-64 in double overtime and lost to Adams Central twice, 41-38 and 49-39.[[In-content Ad]]
