Patriots stay 10th in AP poll (01/09/07)

The Patriots are 10th again, but this time they have company.

Jay County's boys basketball team came in at No. 10 in the Class 3A voting by The Associated Press for the second straight week, tying for the final spot in the poll with Vincennes. Both schools earned 53 poll points.

Defending state champion New Castle (11-1) remained No. 1 with 236 of a possible 240 points, followed by undefeated Edgewood (9-0) and Roncalli (8-0). Jay County (7-2) and Vincennes (7-4), which was unranked last week, finished 17 points behind No. 9 NorthWood.

Jay County returned Friday from a 12-day lay-off, taking a 39-12 lead on the way to a 57-40 victory over the Mississinewa Indians (6-6).

There will be a showdown of top 10 Olympic Athletic Conference teams Friday when the Patriots host the No. 6 Connersville Spartans. They will face another difficult game Saturday at Northeastern (7-3), which is responsible for Centerville's only loss this year.

JC girls top Eastbrook

MARION - Jay County's freshman girls basketball team controlled the fourth quarter Monday for a 26-22 victory over the Eastbrook Panthers.

The Patriots led by seven after the opening period and were still up 15-10 at halftime. But Eastbrook rallied to tie the game at 18 after three quarters before Jay County grabbed the win.

Shelby Gierhart led the Patriots with 12 points, and Brittany Muhlenkamp added 10. Jamie Klinger and Loryn Horn each scored two points.

Fort 8th rolls in second

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery eighth grade girls basketball team put on a second-half clinic Monday in defeating the New Knoxville Rangers 44-25. The seventh grade team lost 23-21.

The Indian eighth graders (5-2) trailed by two at halftime, but limited New Knoxville to just four second-half points. They had an eight-point lead by the end of the third period and pulled away with a 13-point fourth.

Holly Brunswick led the Fort Recovery effort with 20 points. Kendra Brunswick added eight points, and Holly Thien scored six.

The lead switched hands at the end of each quarter of the seventh grade game with the Tribe (4-3) coming up just short. It was outscored 9-4 in the fourth quarter.

Julie Kahlig scored seven points, and Karissa Will finished with six.

Jay 7th defeats Cavs

COLDWATER, Ohio - East Jay Middle School's seventh grade boys basketball team improved to 6-2 Monday with a 37-31 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers. The eighth graders lost, 43-25.

Andy Haffner led the seventh grade squad to victory with 14 points. Shawn Homan had seven points, and Dillon Ainsworth and Darren Scott each added four.

Aaron Emerick posted 11 points as the eighth grade team slipped to 4-4. Garrett Krieg scored eight points.

Chiefs top Union City

Both East Jay girls basketball teams held the Union City Indians to seven points Monday. The eighth grade girls posted a 42-7 win, and the seventh graders cruised to a 21-7 victory.

Laura Castillo led all Chief scorers as she paced the eighth grade team with 11 points. Erin Hunt added seven.

Maria Murphy powered the seventh graders with seven points. Mariah Horniday finished with five.

East Jay also played Delta Thursday with the eighth graders scoring a 19-4 win while the seventh grade team lost 21-15.[[In-content Ad]]
