PORTLAND — You can throw out the records.
Two teams came to Jay County for games this weekend, sporting a combined 20 victories. They both left with double-digit defeats.
The Patriots’ made the Fort Recovery Indians their most recent victim in their current five-game winning streak by a 49-38 count Saturday.
The win for Jay County followed a 73-32 thrashing of Eastbrook (9-4) a night earlier.
“We’re just starting to put things together as a team,” said Patriot senior Trent Bailey. “It’s a great time to start getting going.
“This is the time you need to,” he added, referencing next month’s tournament play in which his team will be looking for a third straight sectional title.
Although the final margin was just 11 points, Fort Recovery (11-6) was never really able to get close after failing offensively for the first six and a half minutes of the second quarter.
The Indians led 9-8 late in the first period when leading scorer Travis VanSkyock went to the bench with his second foul. From there it was all about the home team.
Bailey hit a 3-pointer on an assist from Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman five seconds before the first-quarter buzzer, and Jay County (10-5) never trailed again.
It scored the first 15 points for the second period for an 18-0 run.
Bailey added two more threes during the second-quarter stretch, and Mark Kelly notched one. The Indians didn’t score in the period until Sean Kahlig split a pair of free throws with 1:31 left in the half.
The Patriots increased their 12-point halftime lead by opening the second half with a 9-2 run, and Fort Recovery never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
“We were pretty happy, especially in that second quarter run where we did some nice things ...,” said JCHS coach Craig Teagle. “We came out in the second half and built that lead up and played pretty well for a stretch.”
“It’s always a great win against Fort Recovery — a big rivalry game,” added Bailey. “It’s always a close game, so it was nice to get a little padding.”
Jay County still trails in the border rivalry series 6-3, but has now managed to win each of its last two home games against the Indians.
Bailey powered the victory as he was the lone player in the game to reach double figures. He scored 18 points, hitting 7-of-9 free throws en route to his total.
He also nailed three 3-pointers, putting him on the verge of writing his name alone atop another category in the Patriot record book. With the three triples he matched the career 3-point record of 129 set by 2002 graduate Matt Wendel. He already holds the single-game record for triples, having drained nine last season at Union City.
Bailey, who hit two 3-pointers as a freshman, 15 as a sophomore, 77 as a junior and 35 so far this year, will likely break the mark Thursday when Jay County visits Delta. His 3-point total last year was just one short of the single-season record set by Kevin Bruggeman in the 2002-03 season.
Following Bailey for the Patriots against Fort Recovery were Mark Kelly with nine points, John Retter with eight and Tyler Rigby with seven. Kelly grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and Retter added five. Bailey, Rigby and Bruggeman each had three assists.
The Indians had their worst shooting game of the year — 11-of-44 for 25 percent — and made consecutive field goals just once in the entire game.
“We never got in a rhythm,” said Fort Recovery coach and Jay County graduate Brian Patch. “Part of that is what they did to us — took our inside game away with Sean (Kahlig). (But), I didn’t think we played very smart, trying to force some passes.
“Every time we would work hard and get a steal we would never come down and execute and make them pay for turning the ball over. We had a chance there in the third quarter where they had five or six turnovers ... and if we just would’ve came down and been patient ... then maybe we could’ve gotten into the game.”
Greg Faller paced the Indians with nine points. Tyler Wuebker had seven, Kahlig scored six and Dusty Tobe and Travis VanSkyock added five apiece.
Kahlig had a game-high 11 rebounds, and Dusty Tobe grabbed seven.

Jay County took the JV game as well, 39-28, as Fort Recovery shot just 11 percent in the second half.
The Patriots (12-3) went up 19-17 at halftime and pushed the lead to five points at the end of the third quarter. The outscored the cold-shooting Tribe 12-6 in the final period.
Rhett Retter again led Jay County finishing with 11 points. Clint Muhlenkamp added eight points and six rebounds, Casey Waters had five points and six rebounds and Randy Evans also had five points.
Trent Brunswick hit for 11 points for the Indians, and grabbed seven rebounds. Tony Diller chipped in six points and five rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
