Saturday's game left Jay County High School coach Craig Teagle thinking of last season's against Elwood. And that is not a pleasant memory.

The Patriot boys basketball team struggled against the visiting Bellmont Braves, falling behind by nine in the first quarter. They came back and pulled even four times in the second half, but never took the lead in a 39-36 defeat.

"I'm real disappointed. Not in the fact that Bellmont beat us, because they're good enough to beat us, but I'm really disappointed with our effort, intensity level, execution," said Teagle. "We didn't really play hard until we thought we needed to play hard.

"That's not very good coaching either. I didn't have them motivated. I didn't do something right, because I didn't pull the right strings ...

"They deserved to win. They played better than we did."

After struggling in the opening quarter the Patriots (9-2) rallied back as they limited Bellmont to just a pair of free throws in the second. They tied the game once in the third before falling behind by five again, and then fought back to pull even at 28 on a Kyle Simmons 3-pointer with just under five minutes to play.

The game was tied again at 30 and 33, but the Braves never gave up the lead and went up 39-36 on a pair of Nick Hall free throws with 15.6 seconds left.

Jay County set up its end-of-quarter play, but the resulting fade-away 3-point try from Adam Garringer was off the mark. The home team got one more chance when Hall missed the front end of a one-an-one with 2.9 seconds left, but Eric Homan's try at a long pass to Simmons off the rebound sailed out of bounds.

"I hope this is a wake-up call. Our scheduled just continues to get tougher," said Teagle, whose team is set to play six games in a span of 12 days beginning Tuesday. We are going to have to definitely have some mental toughness."

Hall and Michael Buuck led Bellmont with 10 points apiece. Homan and Garringer each scored 10 for the Patriots.

Josh Beaty scored 12 points to lead the junior varsity Patriots (10-1) to a 37-30 victory.
