Patriots survive scare vs. Daleville (04/23/03)
JCHS softball
PORTLAND — The Jay County softball team shifted roles Tuesday night.
The Patriots taught Anderson Highland they were not to be taken lightly despite their record in a narrow 4-3 loss to the 9-0 Scots Monday. Daleville (1-6) returned the same message Tuesday as Jay County hung on for a 5-4 victory over the Broncos.
“We came into this game thinking we were going to kill them,” said second baseman Renae Laux, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. “We just had to get focused and play our game.”
“Our batting started off really well,” added Katie Alberson, who was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. “After the first few innings we couldn’t get anywhere.”
Jay County (3-6) was in control to start the contest, scoring once in the first inning and four times in the second for a 5-0 lead. However, it did not get a runner to second base again and had just one hit — an Alberson single — in the final four innings.
With pitcher Dachia Grim holding the Patriot offense in check, Daleville took advantage of some defensive mistakes.
Errorless through the first three innings, Jay County had back-to-back follies to start the fourth putting Chelsea Humes on second and Ashley Barker at first. Crystal Earlhart hit a pop up to Laux for the first out, but Grim and Heather Johnson delivered back-to-back RBIs and the Patriots added another error as Humes and Barker came around to cut the lead to 5-2.
Daleville got two more runs — one earned — in the fifth inning to close the gap to one run. However, Jay County starter Ashley Cook allowed just one base runner in the final two innings and retired the final four batters she faced to preserve the victory.
Cook got the win, allowing four runs — one earned — in seven innings. She gave up eight hits while striking out six and walking three.
“We took Daleville about the same way (Anderson) Highland took us,” said Jay County coach Harold Towell. “Tonight we just had a lack of mental concentration on a few balls that should’ve been caught.
“To out credit, (the girls) hung in there and got the win.”
Saffron Redwine had the only hit not recorded by Laux or Alberson, and added a run and an RBI.
“We needed to get our confidence built back up,” said Alberson.
Added Laux: “Just being ahead and then in the last inning (Anderson Highland) beating us, we really need to come into the game (tonight) and get the win.”
The Patriots rode their early runs to the victory, scoring once in the first inning on a single by Alberson, who advanced to second base on an error by right fielder Andrea Thurston. Laux followed with and RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
First baseman Ashleigh Myers started the second-inning scoring spree, reaching first base on an error by Barker. Jenni Chittum also reached on an error, and Redwine drove Myers home with a bunt single.
Chittum was tagged out at home plate after an Alberson single, but Laux delivered again by smashing a two-run triple to right field to score Redwine and Alberson. Laux was caught trying to steal home plate, but Stephanie Imel added the fifth run later.
She was hit by a pitch, stole second and came all the way around on another Daleville error.
While Jay County errors allowed the Broncos to rally later, their own miscues wasted a solid effort from Grim. She took the loss, allowing five runs — three earned — on six hits in six innings.
She walked two and struck out four.
“She has great control,” said Daleville coach Jeff Babbs of his starter. “We look to her to have an excellent season.”
Grim, Humes and Lindsey Ritley each had two hits for the Broncos. Humes scored a pair of runs.
The Patriots will play at Norwell Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Junior varsity
Jay County’s junior varsity softball team was at Muncie Central Tuesday and rallied from an 11-3 deficit to defeat the Bearcats 14-11. The Patriots were staring at the eight-run deficit with just three innings to play, but played great defense to allow the comeback.
Lisa Weitzel paced the Jay County offense with four hits, including a double.
Paige Hummel, Andrea Current, Joyce Bumbalough and Erica Murray each added a pair of hits.
Bumbalough picked up the win for Jay County, striking out four and walking nine.[[In-content Ad]]
