WINCHESTER - Riding the momentum of three straight dual-meet wins, the Jay County High School boys golf team turned in its best invitational effort of the season Saturday.
The Patriots posted a 332 at the Winchester Invitational, finishing third in a 12-team field. Richmond finished first at 321, and Park Tudor edged JCHS for second at 331.
Adam Gray set the pace for Jay County, which scored in the 360s in each of its previous 18-hole events. He shot a 76 and won a playoff for second place.
Gray had three birdies, including two on the Beeson nine at Winchester Golf Club. Those efforts came on the 307-yard, par-4 fourth hole and the 497-yard, par-5 seventh.
He also had a birdie on the 458-yard, par-5 third hole of the Willows nine. He added nine pars as he finished three strokes back of medalist Taylor Jenkinson of fourth-place Union City (341).
Jay County turned in three rounds in the 80s, including an 8-over-par 80 from Adam Horn. He closed the Beeson nine with a birdie on the 145-yard, par-3 ninth for a 3-over 39, and finished the Willows with three consecutive pars.
Jonathan Fennig had a pair of birdies on the Beeson nine, coming on the 353-yard, par-4 third hole and the 458-yard, par-5 sixth. He had three consecutive pars on the Willows and finished with an 88.
Chase Wellman also shot an 88, posting all of his four pars on the Beeson nine. He added his lone birdie on the Willows, matching Gray's effort on the third hole.
Justen Moser had a birdie and two pars in his round of 98.
