FOUNTAIN CITY - The loss to Connersville Friday night had enough emotion for two games. But coming back Saturday, the Patriots showed they still had some left.

Less than 24 hours after its draining overtime defeat against the Olympic Athletic Conference rival Class 3A No. 6 Spartans, 10th-ranked Jay County ran away from the host Northeastern Knights with a 16-0 run second-half in a 59-42 victory.

Senior Corey Comer gave the Patriots the lift they needed, filling up the stat sheet with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

"I thought we came out mentally and physically flat," said JCHS coach Craig Teagle, whose team led throughout the first half but never by more than six points. "We knew last night was a draining game. ... You've got to play with that same intensity and same focus, and we just didn't. The first 16 minutes was just like going to the dentist and getting your teeth pulled. It wasn't enjoyable from our perspective. ...

"I thought we hit a little stretch in the third quarter where our intensity picked up. There was a six- or eight-minute period where we played real well."

That run of 6-minutes, 34 seconds, was all Jay County needed.

The Patriots (8-3) led by three at the half and were up by four after Northeastern's Kahl Wise split a pair of free throws with 3:03 left in the third quarter.

The host team didn't score again until the 4:29 mark of the fourth quarter, and went more than eight minutes without making a field goal.

As the Knights (7-4) struggled to make their offense work, Jay County senior leaders Scott "Scooter" Bruggeman and Comer each scored four points during a 16-point rally.

Comer had a big game all around for the Patriots. While the rest of the team combined to go just 8-for-26 from the field, he carried the offensive load by shooting 8-of-10. He also had an assist and a block to go along with his game-high scoring and rebounding totals.

Teagle said Comer had a bit of a slow start on the defensive end, "but I think when he sat down and he got to see that our focus wasn't very good and our intensity wasn't very high he came back on the floor and played real well. He played like the senior leader I think he is. I am proud of him because he was able to kick it in gear. ... He helped lead his team to a victory."

Northeastern also had a hot hand in junior Lyden Foust, who shot 8-of-9 from the field and finished with 18 points. But the rest of the Knight squad combined for just five field goals as the home team shot 31 percent.

The struggles were especially bad from 3-point range, where they got just one of their 17 attempts (six percent) to go in.

"We have struggled offensively a little bit lately," said Northeastern coach Clay Bolser. "From a coaching standpoint I'm kind of at a loss - I don't understand why."

Bolser was also frustrated by Jay County's work on the glass as the Patriots out-rebounded the Knights 33-25 for the game. Four of the five JCHS field goals in the second quarter were second- or third-chance points.

"We are normally not a zone team ... We felt like it would give us a better opportunity to stop their dribble penetration, and I thought it did," said Bolser. "But any time you switch to zone, you're open to offensive rebounds. ... Comer and (Clint) Muhlenkamp are aggressive and strong and they hurt us

with it."

In addition to the two Patriot big men, Rhett Retter had one of the second-quarter put-backs and added a pair of 3-pointers as he followed Comer with eight points. Bruggeman scored seven and dished out six assists, and Billy Wellman and Muhlenkamp each had six points.

Northeastern is the only team to score a win this year over Centerville, a team Jay County lost to 47-45 in December.

"I don't care where you play," said Teagle. "When you go on the road, it's tough to win. ... You need to be at the top of your game. It's a credit to our kids that we weren't at the top of our game and we were still able to get a 17-point win."

Top Northeastern scorers for the season, Wise and Kevin Toschlog, finished with 10 and seven points respectively to follow Foust, but only two other players got on the board. Wise had seven rebounds, and Foust finished with six.

Junior varsity

Jay County scored more points in the opening quarter than the Knights did in the entire game as it rolled to 9-2 with a 48-19 victory.

The Patriots led 20-10 after the opening quarter, and pushed its advantage to 18 at the half. They allowed no more than five points in any of the final three quarters.

Zach Hummer and Blake Price each reached double figures in leading Jay County, finishing with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Adam Garringer added seven points.

Shawn Stinson's eight points led Northeastern. Zach Greene was next for the home team with just three points.[[In-content Ad]]
