As is so often the case, goalie play was the difference Thursday night.
The Jay County High School girls soccer team didn’t come away with a win, but it forged a tie with the Golden Eagles thanks in part to Mollie May’s effort between the posts.
May, a junior, turned in her second shutout of the season with eight saves, including one in the closing moments. With just a few seconds left on the clock Oak Hill’s Krista Gunsalus launched a shot from about 25 yards out. It was headed toward the upper right corner of the goal, but May leaped in the air and knocked the ball off the crossbar as time expired.
“Mollie has been our player of the game every game. Obviously she was that tonight because she did have some great saves,” said JCHS coach Abby Champ of May, who gave up just a single goal Tuesday against undefeated New Castle. “Tuesday night she had some ridiculous saves. What can you say about Mollie? There’s not many people who do what she does.”

The Patriots (1-4-2) took five shots on goal, but were unable to convert. LeAnn Horn and Mallory Poole each had two shots.
Horn knocked in what looked to be a goal with 19:30 on the clock in the second half, but it was waived off because of an offsides call.
Champ said she felt Oak Hill’s ball control was a key to the game.
“They have a great short passing game, and they have speed,” she said of the Golden Eagles, who improved to 5-3. “Their short-game passing was making as start to run circles. And when we do that we get caught out of position …”
Jay County dropped the junior varsity game 1-0.[[In-content Ad]]
