Patriots top Blackford

HARTFORD CITY — Already on a four-game losing streak, the Patriots fell behind in the opening quarter on Tuesday. But they refused to let their skid reach five games.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team pulled even by the end of the opening quarter, took the lead in the second and knocked off the host Blackford Bruins 48-40.
Blackford hit its first four shots against the Patriots to claim a 10-2 lead. But JCHS (3-6) scored the final eight points of the quarter to even the score, took a seven-point advantage at the intermission and never trailed in the second half.
Catherine Dunn paced Jay County with 14 points, and Katie Aker was right behind her with 13. Alex Loy added six points.
Kayla Hartley scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Bruins (5-4). Maggie Weeks-Foy scored 10 points.
Jay County’s junior varsity team held Blackford scoreless in the first and fourth quarters in a 29-6 win. Lyla Muhlenkamp led the way with eight points, and Gabby Hart and Abby Wendel each tallied six.

Tribe 7th wins again
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team picked up its fourth straight win to open the year Tuesday 33-18 over the St. John’s Blue Jays. The eighth grade team added a 31-25 victory.
Grace Thien scored 14 points to lead the FRMS seventh graders (4-0), who were up 21-5 at the half. Claire Metzger followed with seven points.
Whitney Will totaled 13 points as the eighth grade Indians evened their record at 2-2. Devin Post added eight points.

EJMS tops Bruins
HARTFORD CITY — East Jay’s boys basketball teams rolled to a pair of wins Monday. The eighth grade Chiefs clobbered Blackford 76-12 while the seventh graders picked up a 23-21 victory.
Dylan Martin led a group of three players in double figures for the EJMS eighth graders (5-1) with 22 points. Jay Houck added 14 points, and Ryan Burkett scored 10.
Ethan Myers set the pace with 15 points for the East Jay seventh grade team, which improved to 2-4. Noah Hummel finished with four points.
Miles 2nd on vault
INDIANAPOLIS — Courtney Miles posted the top finish for a group of Jay County gymnasts who competed for Marion’s Mid-America Gymnastics at this weekend’s Hoosier Cup at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Miles finished as the runner-up on the Level 7 vault in the 12-year-old division with a 9.35. She also had a 9.125 on the balance beam, and finished sixth in the all-around at 36.15.
Halle Hill placed sixth on the Level 7 vault in the 7-to-11-year-old division with a 9.1. Hannah Outcalt posted a score of 9.09 on the floor exercise, and Riley Leavell finished with an 8.9 on the balance beam.[[In-content Ad]]
