Patriots win at Connersville

CONNERSVILLE — With Mary Hudson turning in the only victory, the Jay County High School girls swim team road a wave of second-place finishes to victory at Saturday’s Connersville Invitational.
The Patriots scored 346 points to finish just eight ahead of the host Spartans in the five-team field. JCHS was fourth in the boys competition with 207 points while New Castle won with 313.
Hudson cruised to victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 13.49 seconds, wining by more than five seconds over Connersville’s Kerrigan Baker. She also took second in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.27.
Jay County added seven other individual runner-up efforts and was second in all three relays.
Eme Miller took second place in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, Charlotte Becot was the runner-up in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Brie McGhee took second in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Megan Taylor was second in diving with 305.2 points.
Neal Fennig led the Patriot boys with second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Alex Sutton was second in the 500 freestyle.

SA drops 10th
BERNE — The Class 2A No. 2 Garrett Railroaders clobbered the host South Adams girls basketball team 68-15 Saturday.
The Starfires trailed 15-2 after the first quarter and by 27 at halftime of their 10th straight defeat. It marked the sixth time this year in which they have been held to fewer than 20 points.
Heather House scored 13 points to lead Garrett. Megan Getts added 11 points, and Jessica LaTurner added 10.

Alyssa Bluhm had seven points and two assists for SAHS (1-10). Taylor Farlow and Katrina Hawkins each grabbed four rebounds.

Jay place fourth
MONTICELLO — Drake Meska and Kyle Garringer each won championships Saturday to lead the Jay County wrestling team to a fourth-place finish at the 16-team Twin Lakes Invitational.
JCHS finished with 157 points to finish just 2.5 behind third-place Delphi and 6.5 behind runner-up Logansport. South Bend Riley won the tournament with 269 points.
Garringer, a sophomore, led the Patriots with 30 points on the day as he took the 189-pound title. He defeated Frankfort’s Derek Kelly in the championship match with a pin in 5 minutes, 21 seconds.
Meska, who is ranked 11th in the state at 145 pounds, added 28 points for Jay County. The senior scored a 7-2 decision over Northfield’s Hunter Wells in the title match.
Robert Cooper (103) added 15 points for the Patriots, Dyllan Derrickson (160) scored 14 and Conner Ray (112) finished with 12.

Fort freshmen fall
ST. MARYS — Fort Recovery’s freshman boys basketball team fell behind early Saturday in a 41-25 loss to the host Memorial Roughriders.
Kyle Timmerman scored 10 points for the Indians (1-2), who trailed by nine at the half. Kent Retz added seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
