Patriots win at Oak Hill (09/05/07)

JCHS cross country

CONVERSE - Amanda Johnson and the Patriots are well on their way to another big season.

Johnson picked up her first invitational win of the year Tuesday night, leading the Jay County High School girls cross country team to its second. The Patriots scored 47 points at Oak Hill to finish ahead of Western (53) with the host Golden Eagles (124) a distant third in the 10-team meet.

Oak Hill won the boys competition with 50 points, and Western was second with 62. Jay County does not have enough runners to post a team score.

Johnson set the pace for a series of season-best times for JCHS, which also won the season-opening Bellmont Invitational and was the runner-up at Oak Hill a year ago. She finished 45 seconds faster than at last week's three-team meet at Jay County for her best time of the season at 20-minutes, 44 seconds, holding off Western's Katie Hollingsworth (20:46) for the top spot in a field of 87 runners.

The Patriots (24-1) packed four more runners in the top 11, with season-best times from all of them.

Freshman Aly Miller trailed 20 seconds behind Johnson to take fifth in 21:04, and junior Kylie Wellman took seventh in 21:25. It was by far the best race of the year for Wellman as she hacked 1:36 off her previous best time.

Leah Wellman, Kylie's freshman sister, completed the Jay County group of runners in the top group to place 11th at 22:20, 20 seconds faster than her time at the Celina Invitational.

Brittany Burris finished off the Patriot team scoring, running 44 seconds faster than at last week's home meet to place 23rd in 23:57.

The top runner of the three Jay County boys was Tevan Nichols in 53rd at 20:42. Branden Brinton finished 100th in 23:49, and Joe Imel was 112th in 25:54.

Katie Butcher was right behind Burris in 24th for the girls at 24:16, and Cassie Laux finished 26th in 24:39. Also running for the Patriots were Kristen Selvey (36th - 25:50), Deidre Chenoweth (38th - 26:01), Logan Laux (40th - 26:10) and Erica Butcher (48th - 26:52).[[In-content Ad]]
