Patriots win despite lack of offense (05/16/03)
JCHS Roundup
No hits, no problem.
The Jay County baseball team didn’t get a single hit against Anderson Highland Thursday. Yet, it is still undefeated at 6-0 in the Olympic Athletic Conference after a 2-1 victory over the Scots.
The Patriots — 16-2 and ranked fourth in Class 3A — trailed 1-0 after the top of the first before notching two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Heath Williams led off with a walk, and eventually scored on a passed ball. After a Cameron Hummel ground out, Adam Homan got on base with an error by the Anderson Highland center fielder.
Nick Timmerman walked, and Homan advanced to third on the passed ball. That left Chris Myers to pick up his team’s lone RBI, brining in Homan as he reached base on an error by the third baseman.
Trent Bailey and Chad Keen struck out to end the inning, and Jay County had just one base runner the rest of the game.
Still, it was enough for Josh Jellison, who ran his record to 10-0 this season allowing one unearned run on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one in seven innings.
The Patriots’ next game is against Huntington North Monday at Huntington College at 6 p.m.
Golfers fall to Starfires
Jay County’s golf team had several solid scores, but slipped to 5-4 with a 174-176 loss to South Adams (8-0) Thursday.
Tyler Johnston led the Patriots, earning match medalist honors with a 40. Alex Hunt and Jesse Shawver each finished with scores of 42.
Adam Foster and Josh Hall hit the clubhouse with match 52s.
The junior varsity Jay County squad (4-1) edged the Starfires 181-183.
Ben Freeman matched his varsity counterpart with a 40, and Nathan McClung and Josh Thornburg each shot 44. Adam Freeman finished with a 53, and Brandon Michael had a 54.
The Patriots will play in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament Monday at Connersville at noon.
Softball loses to Anderson
The Jay County softball team dropped its 10th straight Thursday in a 7-0 loss to Anderson.
The Patriots (5-19) got one hit each from Stephanie Imel, Nikki Ingram and Saffron Redwine. Ashley Cook took the loss, allowing seven runs — three earned — on nine hits.
