It’s good to be home.
Jay County’s boys soccer team played its first home game of the season Thursday night, topping the Blackford Bruins 6-1. The Patriots started the season with five straight road games — they were scheduled for a sixth, but the remnants of Hurricane Katrina rained out last week’s game at Connersville — going 2-3 away from home.
“Oh my gosh ... It was the first of August since we started (practicing) on this field and we’ve just now got a home game,” said JCHS coach Alan Bailey, whose team narrowly missed a second straight shutout when Blackford scored its lone goal with five minutes to play. “Ya, it’s good to be home.
“We played a good game. The kids are looking better. We did some good things — passing and talking. We were doing the little things that we need to do right. Hopefully this is the start of a good thing.”
Jay County (3-3) got an early score from foreign exchange student Vlady Bjelica five minutes into the game, then put forth a scoring barrage late in the first half.
Goalie Derek Mills actually started the Patriot rally as he unleashed a long punt. The ball went bouncing over the defense and juniors Luke McClung and Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman gave chase.
Blackford goal keeper Brady Rogers tried to dive on the ball, but it bounced away from him and Bruggeman followed for the score with 11:56 to go in the first half.
The next Jay County goal came just over three minutes later, and was probably the prettiest of the game. Kyle Laux took an indirect kick after a Bruin foul, and McClung, who was credited for an assist on Bruggeman’s goal, knocked the ball into the net with a header for a 3-0 lead.
Less than a minute later Bjelica made another charge resulting in a collision in front of the goal.
The ball popped out of the pack and Mason Shreve was on the spot to score on the open net.
Shreve’s tally came with 7:55 to go before the intermission, giving the Patriots three goals in a span of 4:01.
“That’s something we’ve been working on real hard,” said Bailey of his team’s offensive aggressiveness which resulted in 13 shots on goal and 17 shots in all. “Like on that goal that Mason scored. Everybody’s got to follow. That’s how the good teams score.”
Jay County got the ball past Rogers twice after the break.
Bruggeman gave the home team a 5-0 lead at the 25:54 mark of the second half, and Dustin Fox added a score with 4:25 to go.
Rogers, a sophomore, gave up his body time after time and made a variety of excellent saves, but got little help from his defense. He finished the contest with seven saves.
The Patriot defense was solid, denying Blackford for the first 75 minutes after shutting out Union City 8-0 Saturday.
The Bruins recorded only five official shots on goal, with Mills notching three saves in the first half and foreign exchange student Nic Fejza adding one more in the second.
Blackford’s lone goal came from junior Tyler Schache with just 5:04 remaining in the contest.
“We went back to our 4-4-2 with four defenders,” said Bailey, who had toyed with a 3-5-2 early in the season. “Putting Vlady as a defensive midfielder I’ve got five good defenders ... They’re starting to gel together.”
Jay County’s teams will play in triple-header action Saturday at South Adams. The Patriot girls will play at 10 a.m., followed by the varsity boys at noon and the junior varsity boys at 2 p.m.
