The Patriots gave their pool a fond farewell.

Jay County, swimming its final meet in the pool which has been its home since 1975, scored a couple of wins over the Marion Giants Thursday night. The girls closed their regular season with a 118-68 victory, and the boys team won by a 97-89 count.

Construction of a new pool, which is part of an $18 million renovation project at JCHS, is scheduled to begin in March.

Seniors Lindsey Vesperry and Josh Hawn made sure their teams would close the pool in style as they were among five double-event winners for the Patriots.

With sectional approaching next week, Vesperry dominated her specialty events. She was first in the 50 freestyle in 27.53 seconds, and won the 100 freestyle in a career-best time of 1-minute, 0.67 seconds.

Hawn, in just his second meet of the year, was first in the same two events for the boys team. He finished the 50 freestyle in 25.03 and the 100 freestyle in 55.86.

Other seniors participating in their final home meet were Samantha DeWitt, Ye-Ji Choi, Sandy Adkins, Joseph Vormohr, Josh Shatto, Min Geun Cho and Samantha Hilfiker.

Cori Vormohr joined Vesperry in winning a pair of events for the girls team, which finished the regular season at 6-8. She won the 200 individual medley by more than 12 seconds in 2:25.27, and cruised to a win by nearly nine seconds in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.02.

Amber Kelly added a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:19.16. April Acker posted her best career scoring in diving, leading a sweep with 182.40 points.

Jay County also won all three relays.

Tom McCord and Scott Walker joined Hawn in winning two events for the boys team, which won back-to-back meets for the first time this year to improve to 3-8.

McCord broke the one-minute mark in the 100 backstroke for the first time in his career, winning by more than 12 seconds in 59.85. He was also first in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.48.

Walker took care of the long distance events, finishing the 200 and 500 freestyle in winning times of 2:04.60 and 5.47.99 respectively. Min Geun Cho reached the wall in 1:13.24 to win the 100 breaststroke.

Cho’s win left the Patriots leading 87-85 with just one event to go. Needing a win in the 400 freestyle relay, Hawn, McCord, Walker and Lance VanSkyock came through by finishing first by four seconds in 3:51.16.[[In-content Ad]]
