Patriots win Marshall invite

INDIANAPOLIS — Dylan Cope won a pair of events Saturday to lead the Patriots to a first-place finish.
The Jay County High School boys track team earned victories in seven events overall as it won the championship at the John Marshall Invitational. The Patriots scored 128 points at the eight-team event to finish ahead of runner-up 21st Century (Gary), which scored 78 points.
Cope picked up his victories with times of 2 minutes, 9 seconds, in the 800-meter run and 4:45 in the 1,600 run. Austin Bentz completed the sweep of the long-distance events for JCHS by winning the 3,200 run in 11:01.
Cope, Bentz, Jalen Ryder and Nick Leonhard also won the 4x800 relay in 9:05.
Tyler Back finished first in the shot put at 46 feet, ½ inch, and Cade Price took the high jump at 6 feet event. Zane Shreve posted a time of 17.5 to win the 110 hurdles.

Norwell tops SA
BERNE — The South Adams softball team dropped the first game of its doubleheader 7-5 in nine innings to the visiting Norwell Knights, and fell 13-3 in five innings in game two.
Alyssa Bluhm took the game-one defeat for the Starfires, giving up seven runs — four earned — on 14 hits and a walk while striking out six. Lily Taing allowed 13 runs — 11 earned — on 12 hits and seven walks in the game-two defeat.
Bluhm led SAHS (3-5) at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI in the opener and 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game. Lyndsey Chandler had two hits and two runs in the first game, and Alaina Johnston added two hits and one run in the second.


Simmons 35th
INDIANAPOLIS — Jay County senior Katie Simmons finished 35th Friday as she competed in the “Miracle Mile” at the Franklin Central Distance Showcase Invitational.
Simmons posted the second-best time of her career in the 1,600-meter run at the event, which includes the state’s top athletes in the mile as well as the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. She finished in 5 minutes, 18 seconds, which is second only to the 5:15.72 she ran at the 2011 regional meet at Ben Davis.
Bethany Neeley of Eastern (Greentown) won the event in five minutes flat.

Starfires finish 4th
WABASH — The South Adams track teams each finished in fourth place at Friday’s Knight Relays hosted by Southwood.
The Starfire boys and girls teams scored 67 and 65 points respectively, both finishing four behind the third-place host Knights in the eight-team event. Eastbrook won the both the boys and girls competitions with 105 and 100 points respectively.
Joel Schmidt paced the boys team, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 16.01 seconds. Hannah Mitchel earned the only other SAHS victory, taking the girls shot put at 33 feet, 10 ¾ inches.
Leah Mitchel took second place in the shot put behind her twin sister at 31 feet, 9 inches, and was also the runner-up in the discus at 102 feet, 8 inches.[[In-content Ad]]
