Patriots win UC invite again

JCHS roundup

UNION CITY - For a half-decade now, the Union City Invitational has belonged to the Patriots.

Jay County High School's win Saturday in the girls cross country race came by the slimmest of margins, 48-49 over Tri in the five-team event. It was the team's fifth consecutive win at the invitational.

Junior Leah Wellman led the Patriots with a time of 21 minutes, 5 seconds for fourth place. Katie Simmons was just seven seconds behind her in fifth.

Aly Miller placed 10th in 22:09 despite losing a shoe just 800 meters into the race and running the last 2.5 miles with just one shoe. Liz Lennartz came through in 14th place in 22:38, and Logan Laux was 15th with a time of 22:41.

Tevan Nichols matched Wellman's effort as he placed fourth in the boys race in 17:42. Dylan Cope was 17th at 18:54 ahead of Kyle Scott (35th - 21:42) and Zach Johnson (42nd - 23:52).

Boys soccer wins

A year ago, Centerville was the only team JCHS did not beat during the regular season. But the Patriots got the job done Saturday.

Host Jay County scored three times in the second half to knock off the visiting Bulldogs 4-1.

Brad Horn and Patrick Johnson combined for the first three goals for the Patriots, who were 14-0-1 in the 2008 regular season with the lone tie coming against Centerville. Horn opened the scoring 33 minutes into the game when he scored off a Johnson assist.

Horn scored again - his 25th goal of the season - just four minutes after the invermission. Johnson pushed Jay County to a 3-0 lead when he converted a penalty kick with 30 minutes remaining.

Centerville got on the board with 12 minutes to go, but Aldo Castro of the Patriots scored four minutes later for the final margin.

Adam Daniels recorded seven saves as JCHS improved to 8-3.

Colton McCombs scored the lone goal for the Jay County junior varsity team in a 6-1 defeat. Chris Stephens had eight saves.

Spikers lose three

Moser scores for girls

The Jay County girls soccer team fell behind 3-0 in the first half Saturday in a 6-1 loss to the visiting Centerville Bulldogs.

Centerville, which out-shot the Patriots 9-0 in the first half, scored its three goals within a span of less than two minutes.

JCHS (2-6) got on the board in the second half when the Bulldogs were called for a hand ball in the 18-yard box. Lindsay Moser converted the ensuing penalty kick with a shot to the right corner.

Centerville added three more goals, including one on a penalty kick, for the final margin.
