One team entered Tuesday following back-to-back wins, including a big one Thursday night. The other was coming off a devastating defeat.

Guess which one was more hungry for a victory.

Spurred on by Saturday’s loss at Union City, Jay County’s girls basketball team used a 22-1 run as they smacked the Muncie Central Bearcats 50-34.

“I think Saturday hit some of these girls hard,” said JCHS coach Kirk Comer of the 42-39 loss to his former team. “We weren’t ready to go Saturday. Saturday’s over and we’ve got to move on from there ...

“We definitely played with a lot more intensity tonight.”

It didn’t start out that way.

Jay County (6-3) trailed 8-2 four minutes into the game thanks to three straight driving baskets by defending 100-meter hurdle state champion Vanneisha Ivy.

Comer called timeout with 3:38 left in the first period and the Patriots returned to the court a different team.

They locked down on defense, started rebounding with a vengeance and finally got the ball to go in the basket as they outscored the Bearcats by 21 over the next 11 minutes. Six different players scored during the rally with Cassandra Huelskamp, who made her first career start, and Theresa Reinhart scoring four points apiece while Sara Garringer and Dana Horn each added 3-pointers.

“I think we all calmed down,” said junior Whitney Homan, who scored a team-high 12 points. “We got our confidence up. We just slowed down, thought it out and did what we know how to do.”

The big run gave the Patriots a 24-11 lead at the intermission, and Markie Runyon added the first four points of the second half. Jay County led by as many as 22 points before the Bearcats scored the last six of the game for the final margin.

“Saturday we didn’t come ready to play, obviously,” said Chelsea DeBoy, who scored all of her six points in the second half and grabbed seven rebounds. “We talked as a team together and played like a team tonight. It was a big team effort.”

Central (4-4) went scoreless for a span of 9:55 in the first and second quarters while the Patriots took control and built their double-digit lead. It nearly got shutout in the second period before Dimon Price came up with a steal and lay-up with just 44 seconds remaining before halftime.

“They made some adjustments on taking the ability away for us to get the ball inside,” said Central coach Brent Tinder. “And our youth kind of showed a little bit ... we maybe didn’t take the best of shots. We didn’t show a lot of patience when they were making that run.

“We had a nice win (over Richmond) Thursday and maybe they got a little full of themselves.”

After getting hammered on the glass early, Jay County bounced back as Runyon (nine rebounds) and DeBoy led the way to a 48-34 advantage on the glass. They were able to neutralize Shanese Pointer (seven points, nine rebounds), who was one of the top rebounders in the state last year and had 24 in a game earlier this season against New Castle.

Huelskamp added six rebounds for the Patriots, and Reinhart had five.

“Coach said the key to the game was rebounding,” said DeBoy. “They had (Pointer) in there and he just said we needed to box everybody out and we’d get the rebounds.”

Jay County also had great passing, getting assists on two-thirds of its made field goals. Garringer and Horn each dished out five assists, and Huelskamp added three as the Patriots put together a balanced scoring effort behind Homan.

Garringer had eight points, Reinhart scored seven and Runyon, Huelskamp and DeBoy each had six.

Ivy posted a game-high 14 points to lead Central. Tessa McGill finished with 10 rebounds.

Gina Muhlenkamp’s 3-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer tied the game, but the Patriots couldn’t keep up with Central in the fourth as they fell 48-42.

Jay County trailed by six at the half before rallying to tie the score in the third quarter. They fell behind by three with 36 seconds remaining, but could not get the ball to go in the hoop in the closing seconds as the Bearcats took the victory.

Muhlenkamp paced the Patriots with 12 points. Kaelee Keller and Amber Edmundson each added six.

Bookita Vaughen and Erynn Young scored 11 and 10 points respectively to lead the Bearcat victory. Dimon Price and Chelsea Allen each had eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
