Pats, Bruins to meet in opener (05/20/04)

Jay County Roundup

Tipton couldn’t have asked for a better match-up to open play in its Class 3A baseball sectional tournament.

The sectional draw was held today, and the first game at Tipton will pit Jay County (12-8) against the Class 3A No. 8 Blackford Bruins. It will be played Monday, May 31 — Memorial Day — at Tipton at 1 p.m.

Blackford is one of the Patriots’ biggest rivals, and there is added fuel to the fire this season. The Bruins were ranked No. 1 in the state last week when Jay County handed them an 8-5 defeat.

The other first-round tournament game between Delta and the host Blue Devils will be played on Memorial Day at 3 p.m.

The winners of the two first-round games will play in the first of two sectional semifinal contests Tuesday evening (June 1). Mississinewa and Elwood — which each drew a first-round bye — will follow in the second game Tuesday.

The championship game will be played Friday, June 4.

Jay streak ends

The three-game winning streak came to a halt for the Jay County softball team Wednesday as it dropped an 8-0 decision to the Adams Central Jets.

Adams Central scored three times in the first inning. The score remained 3-0 until the Jets put up five more runs in the top of the seventh.

Brittany Logue took the loss, allowing eight runs on 12 hits. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Jenni Chittum, Saffron Redwine and Miranda Betz each had one hit.

The Patriots will be back in action today hosting Fort Recovery at 4:30 p.m.

The third win in Jay County’s streak came Tuesday night by a 9-4 score over the Monroe Central Golden Bears.

The Patriots scored twice in the first inning and never trailed. They held a 5-4 lead after four frames, and scored three times in the fifth inning and once in the sixth to pull away.

Stephanie Imel had a huge day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. She scored a pair of runs.

Chelsea DeBoy also had a double and a triple and scored once, and Katie Alberson had two hits and two runs. Redwine and Andrea Current finished with two hits and one run apiece.

Ashleigh Myers earned the win, allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits. She struck out one and walked three.

Luce hired at Marion

A man with local ties will take over the boys basketball program at Marion High School.

Joe Luce, a 1989 Wapahani graduate, was named as the new Marion boys basketball coach Wednesday. He played baseball at Valparaiso University, and also spent several seasons with the Portland Rockets.

Luce has had two other head coaching jobs, first for three years at Fountain City and for the last two at Benton Central. He was 32-12 in his two seasons at Benton Central with an 18-4 mark last season.

The 33-year-old will take over the program from Moe Smedley, who won a state title in 2000. Marion is second only to Muncie Central with seven state titles, but won just 11 games under Smedley over the last two seasons.

Football camp

Jay County High School will hold its football camp for West Jay Middle School students next week at WJMS.

The camp — which will be run by JCHS football coach Shane Hill and his staff — will begin after school and last until about 6 p.m. The cost of each camp, which includes a T-shirt, is $20 per student.

Registration forms are available at WJMS and JCHS.
