Pfeifer's sectional win eases regional draw (02/01/07)

JCHS wrestling

Winning a sectional title can make all the difference in the regional tournament - at least on paper.

That is the case for Cameron Pfeifer, the only sectional champion out of the 15 regional qualifiers from Jay County and South Adams. He has what looks like a favorable draw for Saturday's regional tournament, which is hosted by Jay County.

The top three wrestlers from each weight class will advance from Jay County to the Woodlan semi-state.

Pfeifer's sectional title at Jay County last week placed him in the top half of the 112-pound regional bracket, where his 30 victories are more than the other three wrestlers combined. Had he finished second in the sectional, he would have instead matched up with a group which averages 21 wins.

The JCHS sophomore will open his quest for a regional crown against Jeff Dobbs of Delta, who finished fourth in the Delta sectional and is just 7-18 on the year. With an opening-round victory, Pfeifer would meet either Bellmont's Carlin Hormann (6-3) or Travis Bryant (5-6) of Muncie Central in the semifinals.

His biggest challenge would likely come in a potential championship match against Yorktown freshman Derek Bevans (33-3), who won the Delta sectional. Bevans takes on South Adams' Braden Baer (21-8) in the first round.

While Pfeifer was the only sectional champion from the two area schools, four more enter the regional with the most victories in their weight class.

Leading that group is Jay County 103-pounder Casey Kenney, who placed third in the sectional but sports a 33-6 record. He will open regional action against Jacob Anderson (26-10) of Yorktown.

South Adams has three wrestlers - Colt Gentis (119), Chase Sprunger (125) and Dustin Ehr (145) - with the top win totals in their groupings.

Gentis, now 31-4, finished as the sectional runner-up and will meet Randolph Southern's Josh Martin (25-8) in his first match. Sprunger, who is 32-5, and Ehr, 31-6, both third-place finishers in the sectional, will take on Winchester's Jake Gibson (25-6) and Yorktown's Brenten Hiestand (28-7) respectively in their openers.

Other opening-round matches for Jay County wrestlers will come against opponents from either Muncie Southside or Yorktown:

Jay County vs. Southside (JC wrestler listed first) - Josh Lochtefeld (24-9) vs. Bryant Whitaker (23-5) at 119 pounds, Ben Theurer (27-13) vs. Tanner Armantrout (19-7) at 130 and Skylar Finnerty (11-18) vs. Storm Smith (21-4) at 135.

Jay County vs. Yorktown - Aaron Miller (8-7) vs. Kyle Mosier (34-2) at 140 and Tom Smith (28-11) vs. Ashton Freemon (28-6) at 189.

South Adams' other four qualifiers will all face opponents from different schools. Those matches are: Juan Tenorio (18-19) against Jan McKenzie (25-8) of Wes-Del at 160, Josh Kimberlin (26-8) versus Delta's Evan Dely (20-5) at 189, Jackson Werst (15-11) against Taylor Hauchan (24-6) of Muncie Central at 215 and Jim West (16-19) versus Winchester's Adam Chalfant (33-2) at heavyweight.[[In-content Ad]]
