PORTLAND — Taking out Vince Campallie may have been a mistake for Shady Nook.
Sure, Shady Nook trailed the Portland Rockets 6-4 in the fifth inning when it happened, but it got a whole lot uglier when Campallie left. Portland scored six times and recorded just one out in the inning, putting away a 12-4 win in eight innings.
The second game of the double header was called because of rain with Shady Nook leading 3-1 in the fifth inning.
Portland also took a couple of wins over Pro-Chemical Saturday as it improved to 17-3 on the season and 10-2 in the Fort Wayne League.
After Campallie left the game, the Rockets were not too kind to a couple of relief pitchers.
The first reliever started the fifth inning with a walk to Brandon Dillon, and then allowed back-to-back RBI singles to Mitch Waters and Cory Heppard. Another walk to Matt Gard brought Zack Byard in to try to stop the bleeding.
He had no success, tossing a wild pitch to score Heppard as he walked Brad Buckingham and Josh Mayfield to start his outing. He finally got Matthew Curtis to ground into a fielder’s choice, but Gard still scored, putting Portland two runs away from ending the game by way of the eight-run rule.
Byard handed the Rockets the first run, throwing a pickoff attempt well over first baseman Joel Henline’s head to bring in Justin Hole, who was pinch running for Buckingham. Adam Childs then knocked a single and Ryan Rammel smashed a double to score Curtis with the game-winning RBI.
Portland’s No. 5, 6 and 7 hitters had outstanding days in leading the team to the victory.
Jay County graduate and No. 6 hitter Mitch Waters had a perfect 3-for-3 outing, with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. He added another hit in the second game before it got washed out.
In front of him, catcher Brandon Dillon had one hit, but it was a two-run home run. He also scored twice and had a stolen base.
Behind Waters, Cory Heppard went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Mike Hale earned the win, allowing four runs — two earned — on five hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked one.[[In-content Ad]]
