The Portland Rockets swept the Indiana Cubs right out of town.
In a three-game series over the weekend, the Rockets won each game by double digits, 12-1, 12-0 and 17-0.
In game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, 2002 Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters iced the Cubs from the mound, striking out 10 in five innings.
The Rockets (21-8) led 3-0 after one before sending 10 men to the plate in the third inning and scoring six runs led by a bases-clearing double by Bryce Davis. Chris Miller added an RBI double, and Justin Marrero added a two-run single to round out the inning.
The Rockets also got late support from shortstop Zach Tanner, who was back for Portland after a short stint with the Gary SouthShore Railcats, when he went deep for a two-run homer in the fifth.
Game two Saturday closed after five innings with Dan Bollenbacher going the distance on the mound and fanning seven.
Portland benefited from another big early inning in the second game. After putting up two outs on an outfield fly and fielder’s choice, Jose Gonzalez reached base on an error and the Rockets took advantage with a streak of six hits and a walk for eight two-out runs.
In a nine-inning game three on Sunday, pitching and hitting were again on for the Rockets in the 17-0 shutout. Starter Michael Caley had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning as he and three relievers combined to give up just two hits and four walks.
Portland put up five runs in the first inning started by a two-run double from Marerro. Waters and Davis also added RBI singles in the frame.
Tanner added a second home run, another two-run shot, in the fifth inning.
The Rockets’ second string also got their hits in, with Justin Miller, Logan Hug and Austin Bridges each adding an RBI in the six-run sixth inning. Adam Wilson, who subbed in during the sixth inning, went yard for a three-run home run in the eighth.
Across all three games, Tanner was 5-of-10 with two home runs and six RBIs, Davis went 3-for-8 with six RBIs, Waters was 6-of-10 with four RBIs. Chris Miller had four RBIs in two games, and Thomas McCowan reached base in nine of his 10 plate appearances with three singles and six walks.
