Portland sweeps weekend double-header (07/07/03)

The Portland Rockets dominated a Saturday doubleheader with Fort Wayne Pro-Chemicals this weekend, raising its record to 20-3 on the season, and 14-2 in the Fort Wayne League.
The Rockets took the first game by a score of 18-3, with starting pitcher Matt “Moose” Ousley nailing down another victory.
Portland recorded 19 hits on the day, led by home runs from James Nowicki and Josh Mayfield. Mayfield, Nowicki and Adam Childs had three hits apiece in route to the victory.
It was more of the same in the second half of the doubleheader, as pitcher Pete Byrum raised his record to 6-0 and the Rockets recorded a 10-2 victory. Nowicki homered again in the second game and Matthew Curtis had a pair of hits.
The Rockets next contest is this Thursday against the Cardinals at Carrington Field, first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
GAMES CANCELED
It was announced this morning that all Portland Junior League Rookie League games have been canceled because of the wet condition of the field.
Because of the start of the Rookie League Tournament on Wednesday, no other games will be made up. Listed below is the tournament schedule for the Rookie League:
Wednesday’s games: Patriot Paints vs. Cook’s Nursery, 5:30 p.m.; Barnett’s vs. Ponderosa, 7 p.m.; Jay County Monuments vs. Williams Auto Parts, 8:30 p.m.
Friday’s games: Kessler Sports vs. Coke, 5:30 p.m.; Doane Pet Care vs. Winner of Game 1, 7 p.m.
Tuesday July 15: Semifinals game will be played at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Wednesday, July 16: Championship, 6 p.m.
GIRLS ROOKIE LEAGUE
In Portland Girls Rookie League softball action last Thursday, July 3, Loy’s Auction and Realty was a winner over Tyson Mexican Original by a 13-9 score and Graphic Printing was a 17-9 winner over Coca-Cola.
Loy’s scored 10 of its 13 runs during the fourth inning on the way to the victory. Jessica Muhlenkamp and Rachel Ferguson had three hits apiece. Hanah Ainsworth was 2-for-3 for Tyson, with a homerun and a double.
In Graphic Printing’s victory, Marsia Hale, Xaiven Overton and Abby Freyburger each recorded four hits, and Freyburger had a home run in addtion to her three singles. Coca-Cola was led by Alyssa Rigby — who was 3-for-3 with a double — and Brittany Stevens, who blasted a double and a three-run homer.
PORTLAND JUNIOR LEAGUE
In Portland Junior League action last Thursday night, the Pee Wee Reese League a pair of high-scoring contests. First National Bank was a 13-7 winner over Kiwanis, and Local 1620 took home a 15-14 win over Lions.
For First National, Aaron Emerick, Craig Permenter and Michael Sager had three hits apiece en route to the victory. Lions’ Billy Wellman hit a three-run homer in the second inning and a two RBI triple in the third, but that still wasn’t enough to get his team a victory. Local 1620’s Justin Bragg had five RBIs of his own Thursday during a solid 3-for-5 performance.
BYRGE IMPRESSIVE
Dunkirk resident Kenny Byrge won a heat race this weekend during TQ Midget racing at the Rush County Fairgrounds.
After Byrge won his heat, he placed second during the feature race, where he was up against 24 other competitors.
The 17-year-old Byrge races for Teegarden Racing, owned by his grandfather, rural Portland resident Larry Teegarden.
Byrge will race again this Thursday at the Indy Speedrome in Indianapolis.[[In-content Ad]]
